1. THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR – DIONNE WARWICK & FRIENDS

At least one of the other two people guessed this one - probably both. I went with "These Dreams" at #45. So, I got creamed.

#98 Nick Lowe "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock 'n' Roll)"

Sounds vaguely familiar. Maybe heard it once or twice back in the day? The video does something I absolutely hate. Nick is strumming cowboy chords an acoustic guitar through the entire video, but there's no acoustic guitar anywhere in the song. Drives me nuts!

Will never enter the top 40

#46 Asia "Go"
#51 Isley Jasper Isley "Caravan Of Love"

39. HE’LL NEVER LOVE YOU (LIKE I DO) – FREDDIE JACKSON

I thought we might've played this on our Adult Contemporary AM station ( 1340 KNZS...call letters that I LOVE to this day, but don't think are being used ) but it's not familiar at all. I know we played "You Are My Lady" there. OK song.
I didn't remember this one, but the video looked familiar. His songs seemed to blend together for me.

35. EVERYBODY DANCE – TA MARA & THE SEEN

We never played this, but I remember seeing mentions of it in Radio & Records and The Gavin Report. I had a vague feeling it was Prince-related, & after Googling I see they're from Minneapolis & sound VERY Prince-ish. Produced by Jesse Johnson, so there's the connection. I don't think I'd ever heard it before, though. It's not bad, but I can see why it didn't explode.
This one was big on our local Urban station too. The Minneapolis sound was a driving force at this time. The follow-up, "Affection", was played on Urban radio too, but didn't crack the Hot 100.

This week is a non-Bubbling Under year so I decided to explore the New Singles Reviews for this week. There are two categories for the reviews: Picks and Recommended. They are defined as follows:

• Picks: New Releases with The Greatest Chart Potential
• Recommended: Records with potential for significant chart action

Picks:
• Heart - These Dreams (entered the chart on 1/18/86 at #54, peaked at #1)
• Eddie Murphy - How Could It Be (didn't debut on the Hot 100)
• Arcadia - Goodbye Is Forever (entered the chart on 2/1/86 at #64, peaked at #33)
• Quarterflash - Walking on Ice (didn't debut on the Hot 100)
• Tom Petty And the Heartbreakers with Stevie Nicks - Needles and Pins (entered the chart on 2/1/86 at #75, peaked at #37)

Recommended:
• Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home (entered the chart on 4/5/86 at #86, peaked at #76)
• Jon Butcher Axis - Between the Lines (didn't debut on the Hot 100). I couldn't find a clip for this one either.
• Jon Miles - Blinded (didn't debut on the Hot 100)
• Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love (entered the chart on 2/8/86 at #83, peaked at #1)
• Lisa Rhodes - Heat It Up (no Wiki page, didn't debut on the Hot 100). She's still making music: PRESS KIT | Lisa R & Lucky Stars
• Prefab Sprout - Appetite (didn't debut on the Hot 100)
• Telluride - Breaking Away (no Wiki page, didn't debut on the Hot 100). I placed some information about the band below.

Telluride is a Birmingham-based rock band founded in 1977 by guitarists Moose Harrell and Rick Carter with keyboardist Roger Bailey, drummer Robert Churchill, and bassist Jim Liner. The group started out playing country-tinged rock, but soon focused on rock.

Bailey and Liner left not long afterward and were replaced by Kevin Derryberry and Scott Walker. Other some-time members included Kent Peterson, Barry Waldrep, Joe Breckinridge and Chip Snow.

The band was in heavy rotation in the Southeastern US during the late 70s and early 80s. In 1980 they had a local hit with Derryberry's song "Birmingham Tonight", which was broken by Lee Masters on WKXX-FM. Their radio fame helped boost regular attendance at their club shows from 100 or so to over 500. Especially well-attended were the "Hotride" shared bills with the members of Hotfoot.

They were finalists in a Miller-sponsored band search contest in 1985, which led to their signing a contract with RCA Records. Their single "Breaking Away" reached number 77 on the Billboard chart that year.

They performed at the 1990 and 1997 City Stages. They were invited to perform at two Alabama gubernatorial inaugurations, and have been named musical achievers by the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, a precursor to being inducted into the hall.

Sorry a little off topic. I will always remember the Heart concert I saw in 1986. Not just for the concert but for what happened in the car after the show in the parking lot. The girlfriend and I had great “conversation”.

Good 7
Okay 9
Bad 24

Thank goodness for the top 5, otherwise it would have been only 2 good.

(40) 45: SHINE ON - L.T.D.

So close to crossing another #40 peaking song off the list! Would have brought the number down to 4.

Just responded to a tweet by Mark Goodman, who said "we must have" gone through each week from Jan 1, 1980 to Dec, 31 1989 on the VJ by now. Maybe they have since they started way back when, but over the last nine years these 5 haven't aired.

22: GUILTY – BARBRA STREISAND & BARRY GIBB

"And we've got nothing to be guilty of". Yeah you do, making lame music!

17: THE BEST OF TIMES - STYX

Sometimes when a Styx song plays I wonder if it's Supertramp. And sometimes the other way round. From now on, I'm referring to both bands as Styxertramp.

13: KEEP ON LOVING YOU – REO SPEEDWAGON *

My guess at #1

7: EVERY WOMAN IN THE WORLD – AIR SUPPLY
