My list of 1982 chart toppers was scarily close. But I totally missed "Don't You Want Me". So going with "Tiger" (even though it goes from "Ebony" to "Want" to "Tiger") put me all the way down to #59! I thought "Want" was 1981. Doh!

Okay 11
Bad 21

33. FORGET ME NOTS - PATRICE RUSHEN

Nina: "She certainly was not a one-hit wonder because plenty of her songs were on the dance and r&b charts"

So according to her, if you chart outside of the Hot 100, you aren't a one-hit wonder?

24. WITHOUT YOU - FRANKE & THE KNOCKOUTS

Mark Goodman: "...scored themselves a top 25 hit".

I can understand saying "top 5 hit" "top 10 hit" "top 20 hit" and "top 30 hit". But a "top 25 hit"? How granular do we need to get?

13. MAKING LOVE - ROBERTA FLACK

5. ALWAYS ON MY MIND - WILLIE NELSON

We just heard the Pet Shop Boys version last week. They're slightly different. You really have to pay attention to tell them apart.

1. EBONY AND IVORY - PAUL MCCARTNEY AND STEVIE WONDER

Both of my competitors chose this one. I'm at #59 with "Eye Of The Tiger".

#72 Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy"
#96 Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like"

I liked these back then, but not shocked they didn't make the 40.

Will never get to the top 40
#46 Bertie Higgins "Just Another Day In Paradise"
#58 Jon Anderson & Vangelis "I'll Find My Way Home"
#60 Sparks "I Predict"
#62 Frank Barber Orchestra "Hooked On Big Bands"
#63 Greg Kihn Band "Happy Man"
#64 Quarterflash "Right Kind Of Love"
#68 Monroes "What Do All The People Know"
#71 Rick James "Dance Wit' Me - Part 1"
#72 Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy"
#74 One Way "Cutie Pie"
#75 Cheap Trick "If You Want My Love"
#76 Temptations/Rick James "Standing on the Top - Pt. 1"
#77 Le Roux "The Last Safe Place On Earth"
#78 Manhattan Transfer "Route 66"
#79 Four Tops "Back To School Again"
#81 Ashford & Simpson "Street Corner"
#82 Olivia Newton-John "Landslide"
#83 Cheap Trick "She's Tight"
#84 Change "The Very Best in You"
#86 Ambrosia "How Can You Love Me"
#87 Reddings "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"
#88 Oak Ridge Boys "So Fine"
#89 Dr Hook "Loveline"
#93 Shalamar "A Night to Remember"
#96 Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like"
#97 Rod Stewart "How Long"
#98 David Bowie "Cat People"
#100 Smokey Robinson "Old Fashioned Love"

11 this time.
#72 Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy"
#75 Cheap Trick "If You Want My Love"
#83 Cheap Trick "She's Tight"
#87 Reddings "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"
#96 Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like"
I'm surprised all of these didn't crack 40.

We used to play If You Want My Love, still Play She's Tight, and played the Waitresses for a few months back in the day when we had a female singer.

It's Gonna Take A Miracle was written by Teddy Randazzo, Lou Stallman and Bob Weinstein. Randazzo, a singer and accordion player, had been a member of the Three Chuckles, a Brooklyn trio that had a #20 hit with Runaround in December 1954. He also had three solo hits: Little Serenade (1958), The Way Of A Clown (1960) and Big Wide World (1963). Randazzo wrote Little Anthony & the Imperials' 1965 hit Take Me Back and co-wrote several of their other hits including Hurt So Bad, Goin' Out Of My Head and I'm On The Outside Looking In.

It's Gonna Take A Miracle
has been recorded by 17 artists including Ken Boothe, Katey Sagal, Laura Nyro & LaBelle, the Manhattan Transfer & Bette Midler, the Shirelles and the Marvelous Wonderettes. Here is the original version by the Royalettes, a Baltimore quartet. It reached #41 on the Hot 100 in September 1965.

39. MURPHY'S LAW - CHERI

I think this might be the first time my "Never Heard It Before" list has only 1 entry. I kinda dig it, though!

And I like ( to varying degrees ) nearly every song on this countdown. I always love these early 80's charts, because it was the last era where you would find a mix of several different genres. Just a couple years later, everything started getting segregated. And that was he beginning of the end of Top 40 radio.

@MonoStereo - I was surprised to see Murphy's Law made into the 40. It was a #1 Dance hit and charted well on the R&B and UK.

In my opinion, I think MTV had a big influence on the shift you mentioned. On the other hand, I loved the influx of UK artists.

I don't agree with Nina. I always considered a song to be a hit if it reached the top 40 on the Hot 100. The other charts are telling, but the Hot 100 covers the most ground from a listener's and buyer's perspective.

Rushen had six top-40 hits and four top-tens on the R&B chart. She had eight top-40 hits and five top-tens on the dance chart. She is not what I would call a "one-hit wonder." Of course if the Hot 100 is the only chart being considered, well........

Here is a 2009 live performance of Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen and Lee Ritenour. Rushen tells the crowd, "If you know it, sing along!" Ummm.......Patrice, I go to a concert to hear the performer, not the crowd.

I thought it would be fun to look at the 10 songs outside the Hot 100 from 6/12/1982. I looked up some information on the songs too.

Bubbling Under The Hot 100
#101 Meco "Big Band Medley” - (peaked at this position)
#102 Scorpions "No One Like You” - (entered the 100 the next week at #89)
#103 Junior "Too Late" - (R&B and UK hit, but peaked at #102)
#104 Larry Graham "Don't Stop When You're Hot" - (peaked at #102)
#105 Buckner and Garcia "Do the Donkey Kong” - (peaked at #103)
#106 Split Enz "Six Months in a Leaky Boat” - (peaked at #104)
#107 A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran” - (entered the chart on 7/17/1982 at #86)
#108 Jethro Tull "Fallen on Hard Times” - (peaked at this position)
#109 Bonnie Raitt "Me and the Boys” - (peaked at #104)
#110 Randy Crawford "One Hello” - (peaked at this position)

Any surprises with the entries? Are there any songs that should have charted higher?

This song was huge at least in Saskatchewan.

Ooooh!!!!!
The coffee hadn't kicked in.
I saw one that said it peaked, and thought they all had peaked at the number shown.
If you keep teaching me to read English, will you also have to teach me how to read French too?

Naa, just Canadian English. First lesson: Make sure the U works on your keyboard.
