My list of 1982 chart toppers was scarily close. But I totally missed "Don't You Want Me". So going with "Tiger" (even though it goes from "Ebony" to "Want" to "Tiger") put me all the way down to #59! I thought "Want" was 1981. Doh!

I'm surprised all of these didn't crack 40.


We used to play If You Want My Love, still Play She's Tight, and played the Waitresses for a few months back in the day when we had a female singer.

It's Gonna Take A Miracle was written by Teddy Randazzo, Lou Stallman and Bob Weinstein. Randazzo, a singer and accordion player, had been a member of the Three Chuckles, a Brooklyn trio that had a #20 hit with Runaround in December 1954. He also had three solo hits: Little Serenade (1958), The Way Of A Clown (1960) and Big Wide World (1963). Randazzo wrote Little Anthony & the Imperials' 1965 hit Take Me Back and co-wrote several of their other hits including Hurt So Bad, Goin' Out Of My Head and I'm On The Outside Looking In.

It's Gonna Take A Miracle has been recorded by 17 artists including Ken Boothe, Katey Sagal, Laura Nyro & LaBelle, the Manhattan Transfer & Bette Midler, the Shirelles and the Marvelous Wonderettes. Here is the original version by the Royalettes, a Baltimore quartet. It reached #41 on the Hot 100 in September 1965.

I think this might be the first time my "Never Heard It Before" list has only 1 entry. I kinda dig it, though!

And I like ( to varying degrees ) nearly every song on this countdown. I always love these early 80's charts, because it was the last era where you would find a mix of several different genres. Just a couple years later, everything started getting segregated. And that was he beginning of the end of Top 40 radio.

@MonoStereo - I was surprised to see Murphy's Law made into the 40. It was a #1 Dance hit and charted well on the R&B and UK.

In my opinion, I think MTV had a big influence on the shift you mentioned. On the other hand, I loved the influx of UK artists.

I don't agree with Nina. I always considered a song to be a hit if it reached the top 40 on the Hot 100. The other charts are telling, but the Hot 100 covers the most ground from a listener's and buyer's perspective.

Rushen had six top-40 hits and four top-tens on the R&B chart. She had eight top-40 hits and five top-tens on the dance chart. She is not what I would call a "one-hit wonder." Of course if the Hot 100 is the only chart being considered, well........

Here is a 2009 live performance of Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen and Lee Ritenour. Rushen tells the crowd, "If you know it, sing along!" Ummm.......Patrice, I go to a concert to hear the performer, not the crowd.

I thought it would be fun to look at the 10 songs outside the Hot 100 from 6/12/1982. I looked up some information on the songs too.
