#63 Sparks/Jane Wiedlin "Cool Places"
Shocker
#68 Planet P "Why Me?"
Too bad. I really like this song.
#77 Bow Wow Wow "Do You Want To Hold Me?"
A bit of a surprise. I thought it would have at least be in the low 50's.
#87 Call "The Walls Came Down"
Great song. I thought it would have been very close to 40.
#93 Modern English "I Melt With You"
COMPLETE shocker. I really thought this would have been at least a top 10 or 20.
#94 Psychedelic Furs "Love My Way"
Another shocker. I thought this would have been a top 40 for sure.

As much as 80's Radio beats 'I Melt With You' to death, you'd think it was #1.
It was one of those songs that was huge on MTV ( that era is rife with "MTV hits" ) but never caught on with radio as much. It took radio a few years to kinda catch on to playing some of the stuff their listeners were watching. And in more modern times it seems like "80's hits" radio is more based on MTV playlists of the time that what the radio was actually playing back then.

Bill Withers wrote and recorded Lean On Me in 1972. It topped the R&B chart for one week in June and topped the Hot 100 for three weeks in July. It was his only number-one hit on either chart. Club Nouveau's 1987 version went to number one on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart and won a Grammy for best R&B song.

Lean On Me has been recorded by more than 140 artists including Johnny Mathis, Michael Bolton, Anita Bryant, O.B. McClinton, Tom Jones, Crystal Gayle, Dobie Gray, Denise LaSalle, Georgie Fame, Al Green, Al Jarreau, Fontella Bass, Bonnie Tyler, Ike & Tina Turner, Anne Murray, Glen Campbell and Carla Thomas. I like this 1989 version by Thelma Houston and the Winans. They turned it into a gospel song. Have mercy!

40. COME AS YOU ARE - PETER WOLF

Little surprised this made the Top 40 - I remember it being not as successful as "Lights Out". Either way, one of the all time great stupid videos.

35. SONGBIRD - KENNY G

I used to use this song to fade into the Royals Radio broadcast during baseball season, because I was too lazy to get the back-timing right. People probably wondered why it played EVERY night before the game.
31. GET THAT LOVE - THOMPSON TWINS

I don't recognize this at ALL. Admittedly, I was out of radio at the time & not listening much. It sounds like a lesser remake of one of their other hits.

29. YOU CAN CALL ME AL - PAUL SIMON

The 70's countdown nailed one of my all-time most hated songs this week with "Old Time Rock & Roll". And this is the version for the 80's.

28. SERIOUS - DONNA ALLEN

Hadn't heard this one before, but I have heard all of Janet Jackson's 80's hits. So close enough. And what an awful video.

11. RIGHT ON TRACK - BREAKFAST CLUB

Thanks, Madonna!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye, Top 40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. ALWAYS - ATLANTIC STARR

I still have a promo single of this, in the shape of a heart with an arrow through it. I bet it's worth upwards of 3 American dollars.
8. YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON - KIM WILDE

I could take or leave this, but if you've never heard her debut album ( self-titled, with "Kids In America" ) you should. One of my favorite records of the 80's.

4. LA ISLA BONITA - MADONNA

I worked with this kid at the radio station who had me convinced one day for about 10 minutes that "La Isla Bonita" was Spanish for "tuna fish islands".

I haven't heard the full album, but always liked the couple of songs that made it to FM & MTV.
