28 good. They have done the 05/16 countdown before.

At the end of the countdown there was a promo for the 1984 countdown next week followed by a promo for a 1981 countdown next week. Poor editing. I suspect the revered 1984 and 1981 at last minute which explains last week saying 1984 and the double promo this week.

Last year we did the week prior

Good 10
Okay 6
Bad 24

40. JUST SO LONELY - GET WET

First time hearing on the VJ? It was only in the top 40 for this week and the next week. Nina didn't even remember it.

30. AI NO CORRIDA - QUINCY JONES

I heard it as "I have no career".

14. HOW 'BOUT US - CHAMPAIGN

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

13. MORNING TRAIN - SHEENA EASTON

My guess (since I was thinking about '84 all week, then had to come up with something real fast, this was the best I could do on the spot). Haven't heard about anyone else (friend's son or old room mate) getting in on the last minute action.

Will never reach the top 40

I've Been Waiting For You All Of My Life was Paul Anka's last solo chart hit. It peaked at #48 in May 1981. Anka's final chart hit was Hold Me Til The Mornin' Comes with Peter Cetera, which reached #40 in September 1983. I've Been Waiting For You All Of My Life was written by Linda Kimball and Mark Sherrill and was first recorded in July 1978 by Con Hunley for his self-titled debut album. Released as a single, it reached #14 on the country chart in March 1979. Only one other person has recorded the song: R&B singer Ruby Winters, who included it on her 1979 album Baby Lay Down. Here is the original version by Con Hunley. Con is short for Conrad.

Minor surprises or not. The first 3 got airplay at least in Saskatchewan. The last one did too but novelty songs rarely chart so I can see why it didn't.

@sadchild - I had to find the video again:

I agree. We missed out on many gems that only landed in the lower reaches of the chart or didn't chart at all.

It's interesting to see three Jackson singles in the 100 at the same time, but none made it into the 40. The Chaka Khan song was a #1 US R&B hit and was originally recorded by Average White Band.

I happened to hear Betty Davis Eyes (possibly from the countdown). Man, those are some awkward lyrics.

She's precocious, and she knows just what it
Takes to make a pro blush
She got Greta Garbo's standoff sighs, she's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue

She'll expose you, when she snows you
Off your feet with the crumbs, she throws you

Huh?

Anyway, enjoy this rendition from The Killers' Brandon Flowers

We used to listen to this when I was a kid. It was up there with Allan Sherman and Dr Demento.

I don't think they lyrics mattered. It was catchy and referred to Betty Davis. I have probably heard those lyrics a zillion times and sang along to them and never really listened to them. It was good enough for 9 (non-consecutive) weeks @ #1 and the #1 spot on the 1981 chart (thanks to the chart year ending in November and keeping Physical in 1982).

It was one of those songs where the lyrics were unintelligible and you didn’t know what was being sung until you looked up the lyrics on the Internet later in life. I was never a huge fan of the song, but I remember it being all over MTV early on.

1984 - patchy, for sure

Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time"
Lionel Richie "Hello"
Phil "Against All Odds"
Wham "Careless Whisper" (1985)
Sticking with "Time After Time" for this week, because now that I know the top 4 for last week, I'd be cheating if I changed my entry.

As for '81 my friend's son nailed #1 with Bette Davis. His old room mate chose "Morning Train" like I did and landed at #13 with me.

And I'm outta this thread until I've heard the upcoming VJ...
