@Jon

"Don't Ask Me Why" really didn't get the attention I thought it deserved back in the day. It's one of my fav Eurythmics songs for sure! For me, it was a comeback after their upbeat light-hearted pop like "Sisters Are" and "Would I Lie" -- which I did not get into at all.

That's interesting about Luke from 2 Live! I couldn't find anywhere that he's telling kids not to be vulgar, but I read a few articles about him being a high school football coach. Thanks for passing that along!

Agreed on "Love Shack". I liked it back in the 90s but EVERY SINGLE EVENT I WENT TO, I HEARD THIS SONG. So it's been overkilled to the extreme.

@IdRatherBeSkiing is right about the list of "songs that will never make the top 40" showing the position of the song that week, but coincidentally, "No Souvenirs" happened to be peaking that week. Such an amazing song, I think it deserved to have done better than #95 too!

Better than 1989 but already mostly not my cup of tea. I can't think of the Tiffany song now without thinking about "I Think I'm a Clone Now" by Weird. Al.

Billboard FINALLY fixed their chart peaks! Now the peak is accurate, not just 'how high the song has gotten so far up to the week you are looking at'.

34: GIRLS ARE MORE FUN – RAY PARKER, JR.
26: SO IN LOVE – ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVERS IN THE DARK
21: SOUL KISS – OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN

Don't recall ever hearing these. If I have, it's only been on the VJ40 and I've blocked them out.

24: PARTY ALL THE TIME – EDDIE MURPHY

Nina called this a top 40 hit. While it's technically true, it's a strange way to describe a #2 song, especially when the VJs so often call them top 20 hits, top 10 hits and top 5 hits.

12: YOU ARE MY LADY – FREDDIE JACKSON

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

8: NEVER – HEART

Not listed in the band's chart history on Billboard...?

7: BROKEN WINGS – MR. MISTER

My guess at #1 this week.

1: WE BUILT THIS CITY - STARSHIP

My friend's roommate picked this one. My friend's son picked "Man In Motion" which was #99, his first time not picking a top 40 song in our 21 weeks of doing this.

#67 Morris Day "The Oak Tree"

Forgot about this one. I wonder when the last time someone was on a dance floor and started (intentionally) doing the oak tree.

#87 Five Star "All Fall Down"

Holy cow! This girl group had a "Take On Me"-like "pencil-sketch animation combined with live-action" video. But "Take On Me" is also on the Hot 100 this week. Who did it first?

I found an article in Billboard (Aug 3, 1985) talking about how animation in music videos was the new big thing in 85 like "Raspberry Beret", "Money For Nothing", "Take On Me" and this song. Quote: "At least a dozen videos that prominently feature animation are in current release."

Won't reach the top 40
#50 Wang Chung "To Live And Die In LA"
#54 Prince "America"
#56 Kiss "Tears Are Falling"
#58 Gino Vannelli "Hurts To Be In Love"
#60 Talking Heads "And She Was"
#61 Roger Daltrey "After The Fire"
#63 Pointer Sisters "Freedom"
#64 Jack Wagner "Too Young"
#67 Morris Day "The Oak Tree"
#69 Rene & Angela "I'll Be Good"
#72 John Cafferty "Small Town Girl"
#73 James Taylor "Everyday"
#74 New Edition "Count Me Out"
#75 Rush "The Big Money"
#76 Howard Jones "Like To Get To Know You Well"
#77 Maurice White "Stand By Me"
#79 Cheech & Chong "Born In East LA"
#81 Christopher Cross "Charm The Snake"
#82 Katrina & The Waves "Que Te Quiero"
#85 Marillion "Kayleigh"
#86 Loverboy "Dangerous"
#87 Five Star "All Fall Down"
#89 9.9 "All Of Me For All Of You"
#90 Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
#91 INXS "This Time"
#92 John Parr "Love Grammar"
#93 Robert Palmer "Discipline Of Love"
#94 Lisa Lisa "Can You Feel The Beat"
#95 Cheap Trick "Tonight It's You"
#97 Quarterflash "Talk To Me"
#98 Oingo Boingo "Weird Science"
#100 Jane Wiedlin "Blue Kiss"

I invited somebody to join us here to chat about the VJ Big 40 but he can't register on the site?

Hi Mark - I tried to register on the site and received the following message "New registrations are currently not being accepted."
I'm bummed because I had my commentary ready to go.

Oh man that sucks. Let me look into it.

I sent a note to using the "Contact Us" too, but I didn't hear back.

Is the site really not accepting new people?

I believe they have had repeated problems with the Russian or Chinese hackers. Setting was probably left off.

Thanks @sadchild for pointing me to the forum!

Here my humble two cents on the 40 and the songs that won't make it.

37: OBJECT OF MY DESIRE - STARPOINT

StarPoint had a ton of R&B hits, but I didn't remember them until this track. The lead singer, Renee Diggs, passed away some time ago.

35: RUNNING UP THAT HILL – KATE BUSH

Kate Bush is amazing. I think she may have been too avant-garde for US audiences. She deserved more hits in the US!

33: WRAP HER UP – ELTON JOHN

George Michael sang on this track as well, but he isn't credited.

32: SAY YOU, SAY ME – LIONEL RICHIE

@sadchild - Can I borrow your Beavis and Butthead image to place here?

31: SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES – EURYTHMICS AND ARETHA FRANKLIN

A great pairing of strong voices here. Another interesting pairing around this time was Elton John and Millie Jackson on "Act of War Part 1" which was released in 1985, but didn't make a splash in the US.

27: I’M GONNA TEAR YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN – PAUL YOUNG

I've never heard the MTV VJs or Casey Kasem mention that this is a 1973 remake by Ann Peebles. The follows a trend of UK acts covering rare R&B tracks probably due the Northern Soul Movement. "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell falls in this category too.

23: I MISS YOU - KLYMAXX

This is a standard ballad, but they were actually a very good all girl band.

10: LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME – THE THOMPSON TWINS
9: BE NEAR ME - ABC

I'm always excited to see Thompson Twins and ABC chart. Especially ABC. :)

5: PART-TIME LOVER - STEVIE WONDER

I need Beavis and Butthead to help out here…

Won't reach the 40:

#63 Pointer Sisters "Freedom"

I don't remember this one at all.

#67 Morris Day "The Oak Tree"

@sadchild - From what I can gather, this was Day's first single as a solo artist. He sang on two other "teach a dance" tracks. "The Walk" which I don't think hit the 100, and of course, "The Bird".

#69 Rene & Angela "I'll Be Good"

This was major hit in the UK and US R&B. Angela Windbush is from my home town.

#87 Five Star "All Fall Down"

@sadchild - Five Star was a three girl, two boy group of siblings (The Pearsons). There were kind of like a Jackson 5 of sorts from the UK. They had a string of US R&B and UK hits, but never made the 40. The got close with a #41 song once. They have an interesting rags to riches and back to rags story too. I looked up the release dates and Take on Me was released first so they probably picked up the inspiration from them.

#89 9.9 "All Of Me For All Of You"

I was surprised this see this here. I stumbled across this watching an 80s video show on YouTube. I thought this song was more obscure.

Welcome to the DRC!

That Kate Bush song is excellent.
And the Paul Young song I always dig for the great fretless bass playing.
