Her rendition of "I Will Always Love You" is like an air-raid siren. Dolly Parton wrote it as a sweet little lullaby, and Whitney totally "American Idols" it. Actually, I think Whitney invented that style.

If you want to go after Whitney for the way she sang, you might as well go after Clive Davis. He's the one who signed her. He probably hired the producers that gave her the material and had her sing the way she did.

Must be a taste/preference thing.
She's generally regarded as having had one of the better voices in pop.

I'm okay with most of her 80's songs. Not really a fan of the 90's songs.

IRBS has shown he has a lack of taste.

I don't know which is worse. His weekly ratings of 80s countdowns, or Jon's bitching of the NFL.

33. CANNONBALL - SUPERTRAMP
19. JUST AS I AM - AIR SUPPLY

Shocked to hear these guys in the top 40 this late in the decade

32. WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER HERO (THUNDERDOME)- TINA TURNER

One of her biggest songs, but it's been long forgotten (with the exception of 80s on 8).

31. FIND A WAY - AMY GRANT

Didn't know she had a mainstream hit before "Next Time I Fall".

28. SUMMER OF '69 - BRYAN ADAMS

Every time I hear someone on the radio talk about "why did he choose the year 1969?" I laugh. It's not a year. Right at the end of the song, he plainly sings, "Me and my baby in a 69". I think anything else he's said about the song in interviews is just misdirection.

27. ROCK ME TONIGHT (FOR OLD TIMES SAKE) - FREDDIE JACKSON

Thought this song would never end. Radio edit please? Or better yet, never play it again!

18. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE - DEPECHE MODE

They only had 2 songs hit the top 40 in 80s, so it's not often a VJ would be able to talk about Depeche - yet they never do. However, for artists that had a zillion hits in the 80s and are heard on every other countdown, we get their life history every time.

8. GLORY DAYS - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

STOP SHOUTING! YOU'RE SINGING IN ALL CAPS, BOSS!

4. YOU GIVE GOOD LOVE - WHITNEY HOUSTON

I still say if it weren't for Clive Davis, Whitney would still be alive today. Here's something I wrote back in 2009, before she died.

In 2006, Whitney Houston decided she was done. Done with being smacked around by an unfaithful husband. Done with having the details of her lesbian experiences and photos of drug paraphernalia in her bathroom made public. Done with being an entertainer. Done with everything except raising her daughter far out of the public eye.

“I had other plans about three years ago,” Houston confided. “To live on an island, and open a fruit stand, and do my own little quiet thing… Just raise my daughter and call it a day.”

Then she got a phone call from Clive Davis, the man who originally signed her to Arista Records in 1983.

“Well, no. That’s not what you’re going to do,” Davis reportedly told her.

Houston canceled her plans.

411MANIA | Under the Scalpel 09.11.09: Whitney Houston, New Boyz, Pitbull, Shakira, The Guild, Tim McGraw

3. EVERY TIME YOU GO AWAY - PAUL YOUNG

Always makes me think of Planes Trains & Automobiles, one of my fav movies of all time. It's starts playing as the movie is ending.

2. RASPBERRY BERET - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION

I tweeted this back in 2011 when Prince was getting sued for $700K.

It's about time somebody punished him for following up Purple Rain with "Raspberry Beret"

1. A VIEW TO A KILL - DURAN DURAN

Cool story Alan told about how a member of DD told someone in the Bond franchise "So when are you gonna have someone do a good Bond song?" I lol'd.

Will never make the top 40
#48 Jeff Beck "People Get Ready"
#52 Weird Al "Like A Surgeon"
#63 George Thorogood "Willie"
#64 Gino Vannelli "Black Cars"
#66 John Fogerty "Centerfield"
#69 Tom Petty "Make It Better"
#70 Carly Simon "Tired Of Being Blonde"
#80 Hooters "All You Zombies"
#83 Y & T "Summertime Girls"
#85 Foreigner "Reaction To Action"
#93 Men At Work "Everything I Need"

The channel plays radio edits of almost all their songs Not sure why not this one.

#64 Gino Vannelli "Black Cars"
#66 John Fogerty "Centerfield"
#80 Hooters "All You Zombies"

Weird Al doesn't surprise me although I thought it may have cracked the top 40. The rest do although I suspect with Gino & Hooters, it may have been a Canadian thing with more airplay up here.

Rough countdown this week. I don't do well with country crossover and yacht rock.

40. DRIVIN' MY LIFE AWAY - EDDIE RABBITT

I always change the words to "Ooo I'm wastin' my life away, listening to country..."

30. MAKE A LITTLE MAGIC - THE DIRT BAND

I disagree with Alan. I've never heard "nitty gritty" used a term for gettin' it on. Nitty gritty means the real details or actions - the meat of the task at hand. Like, "ok we've covered the superficial crap about the incident, now let's get down to the nitty gritty details of what really happened." Or "we said we were gonna bleach each other's assholes, so enough preparing - let's get down the nitty gritty of this task."

20. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK MEDLEY - MECO

Just goes to show that Star Wars was so popular that you could probably have taken bags of actual shit, thrown a Star Wars sticker on them and sell a million.

13. IN AMERICA - CHARLIE DANIELS BAND

Do all of their songs sound exactly like "Devil Went Down To Georgia"?

11. EMOTIONAL RESCUE - ROLLING STONES

I agree with Aaron. This song is garbage.

Songs that will never reach the top 40
#42 Queen "Play The Game"
#47 Kiss "Shandi"
#61 Roger Daltry "Free Me"
#66 Teri Desario & KC "Dancin' In The Streets"
#72 Pat Benatar "You'd Better Run"
#87 Ted Nugent "Wango Tango"
#88 J Geils Band "Just Can't Wait"
#94 Grateful Deaed "Alabama Getaway"
#95 Gary Burband with Band McNally "Who Shot JR?"
#98 Cheap Trick "Everything Works If You Let It"

That's the reason I like this countdown. I didn't hear all the countdown but I bet Alan Hunter lamented that this was because it was pre-MTV.

#66 Teri Desario & KC "Dancin' In The Streets"
#72 Pat Benatar "You'd Better Run"

#88 J Geils Band "Just Can't Wait"
#98 Cheap Trick "Everything Works If You Let It"
Surprised at all of these.

#95 Gary Burband with Band McNally "Who Shot JR?"

Not surprised somebody tried to capitalize on the Who Shot JR hoopla

Now my comments. If any penguins are passing by, now is the time to scroll to the end.
