They played this exact countdown two years ago. Old comments are here.

They played the following week's countdown one year ago. Old comments are here.

New comments:

I was riding in the car with my son yesterday. He had his headphones on and was playing a game. Eventually he says, "My phone just ran out of battery." I told him, "You can listen to the 6 biggest songs from this week in 1988 with me!" He replies, "I'd rather just stare at this blank screen."

23. LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING - CLIMIE FISHER

My wife pointed out that at times this guy sounds like Rod Stewart.

14. DO YOU LOVE ME - THE CONTOURS

Couldn't get away from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack no matter how hard I tried. Not that I disliked the old songs on it, but friends would play it 2 or 3x a damn day.

Won't make the top 40

#53 Scritti Politti "Boom! There She Was"
#54 Cyndi Lauper "Hole In My Heart"

#78 Stryper "Always There For You"

None of the also rams deserved top 40 for this week. Same could be said for most of the top 40. 1988 is probably the lamest year for countdowns for me. Too little good stuff.

@kingchuck69 The countdown you posted has Katrina & The Waves at #40 and a different Neneh Cherry
song at #39... ?

Good 10

My comments on ten of these songs two years ago.

40. BUFFALO STANCE - NENEH CHERRY

I had always wondered where the term 'buffalo' came from. Thanks Alan.

'People tend to associate the word Buffalo with Bob Marley's 'Buffalo Soldier',' Ray once explained, 'but in fact it's a Caribbean expression to describe people who are rude boys or rebels. Not necessarily tough, but hard style taken from the street... a functional and stylish look; non-fashion with a hard attitude.'

35. ME MYSELF AND I - DE LA SOUL

My friend had a three-sided record of this single. The A-side was normal, but the B-side had two grooves built into it. So depending on when you put the needle down, you would hear one of the two songs on that side.

De La Soul - Me Myself And I

12. CRAZY ABOUT HER - ROD STEWART

Decent song but those yells at the end are just awful. What the hell was he thinking?

7. LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME - BON JOVI

What a coincidence, I just posted something on my twitter about Bon Jovi on Saturday.

4. RIGHT HERE WAITING - RICHARD MARX

And Richard Marx just tweeted about his own song last month. His only got 260,197 more likes than mine did.

2. ON OUR OWN - BOBBY BROWN

Something is telling me that Brown got sued for this song, but I can't find anything on the web about it. Maybe I've confused this song with another one?

#61 Billy Squier "Don't Say You Love Me"

I know his 1984 video for "Rock Me Tonight" is called his 'career-killing moment', but I thought this whole 1989 album was great. It's the only album of his I own. And I still listen to it a couple times a year.

#66 Indigo Girls "Closer To Fine"

One of my fav songs of all time.

Songs that won't make the top 40
#43 Aretha Franklin/Whitney Houston "It Isn't, It Wasn't..." #41 peak
#47 10,000 Maniacs "Trouble Me"
#56 John Mellencamp "Jackie Brown"
#58 White Lion "Little Fighter"
#60 Robert Palmer "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming"
#61 Billy Squier "Don't Say You Love Me"
#62 Bad English "Forget Me Not"
#72 Outfield "My Paradise"
#74 Dead Or Alive "Come Home With Me Baby"
#75 John Cafferty "Pride & Passion"
#77 Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock "Joy & Pain"
#79 Call "Let The Day Begin"
#82 Bulletboys "Smooth Up"
#86 Cult "Fire Woman"
#88 Cinderella "Gypsy Road"
#93 Guns N' Roses "Nightrain"
#95 Adrian Belew "Oh Daddy"
#100 Living Color "Open Letter (To A Landlord)"

Do we know which countdown Casey was using? He was not on AT40 then so may not have been using Billboard. I think the VJs use billboard pretty standardly now.

I thought these 3 would have been closer to at least the top 50.

#95 Adrian Belew "Oh Daddy"
Seeing Adrian on the charts at all is fantastic. He's not something that the general public gets.
His Inner Revolution album is amazing. I listen to it frequently.

I was just looking at all the #1 songs over the years, and I see in 1980 "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" listed. I had thought it had been #1 but then a couple of weeks ago on the 80s either Goodman or Hunter mentioned it wasn't and was at its highest position. I would expect if one was doing a countdown they would actually research how the song did and where it is that week. Hunter is usually pretty good on that but I can't remember which one made the comment.

A strong countdown for '82. Looks like we're past the most of that Anne Murray, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand stuff, and most of the country crossover - MTV is finally starting to have an impact on the top 40.

Hard to believe this was their biggest hit. It is a great song but there are better ones from the 70s.

Not only was "Dreams" higher-charting than "Hold Me", but so was "Don't Stop" at #3.

Fleetwood Mac Chart History

40. EARLY IN THE MORNING - THE GAP BAND

Later covered by Robert Palmer in '88 on Heavy Nova, which I got for Xmas on cassette that year.

36. HOT IN THE CITY - BILLY IDOL

One of my least favorite Idol songs.

34. YOUR IMAGINATION - HALL & OATES

H&O was my fav group before I got into hair bands, but somehow I missed this one back in the day.

32. PAPERLATE - GENESIS

Not sure why, but lately I've been on an early 80s Genesis tear (pre-Invisible Touch). "Turn It On Again", "Misunderstanding", "Abacab", "No Reply At All", "Mama", "Illegal Alien" and this one. Also "Follow You Follow Me" from '78.

27. WHO CAN IT BE NOW - MEN AT WORK

Just read this interesting tidbit recently from Colin Hay:

There were some people living next door who were moving a bit of product. Mistakes were made, and people would knock on our door looking for some kind of stimulant, and we didn’t have it. You were always hearing people banging on other people’s doors. We had one of those little spy holes, and I was always creeping toward the door when someone was knocking, to see who it was. I was never sure I wanted to open the door.

16. LOVE IS IN CONTROL - DONNA SUMMER

That outfit Summer wears in the video is hefty! hefty! hefty! Too bad the song is so wimpy wimpy wimpy...
