Will never reach the top 40
#43 Loose Ends "Hangin' On A String"
Hands down my favorite UK R&B group. (R&B #1). I remember I saw a clip of "Hangin' on a String" from American Bandstand. There are some fun vintage commercials after the clip. @sadchild - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam just finished performing. I would have rather seen Loose Ends. LOL. .
#57 King "Love And Pride"
I heard this on a UK 80 radio station a while back. This should have cracked the 40.

#68 Air Supply "Power Of Love"
Everyone and their grandmother decided to record this song. Here are the peaks:
Jennifer Rush #57
Air Supply #peaked at this position
Laura Branigan #26
Celine Dion #1

#70 Limahl "Only For Love"
I wasn't aware Limahl had anything else enter the 100 on his own besides "NeverEnding story".
#78 Til Tuesday "Looking Over My Shoulder"
I always thought they should have been bigger.

#110 - Gwen Guthrie "Padlock" (peaked at #102, #25 R&B)

Comments:
  • This is the last week the Bubbling Under chart was published until it resurfaced in 1992.
  • "Fly Girl" has the same beat as "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox. "Let's Go All the Way" didn't debut on the Hot 100 until 12/28/85 so I'm unsure if this was a sample. I remembered this song when I created the playlist. I probably hadn't heard it since 1985.
  • "The Screams of Passion" is a personal fav.
  • "It's Over Now" made it to the #101 position prior and stayed there for five weeks.
  • Larry Levan remixed the 1985 release of "Padlock". He was a huge influence on the evolution of house music and is still remembered. Also, he was mentioned on the Leee John/Imagination Podcast MonoStereo shared last week.

Boogie Boys "Fly Girl"
I remember that song from back in the day, still like it today. "She gave you a number, it was Dial-A-Joke!"

That's a shame!

I've always wondered about that. Which came first? The chicken or the e.... I mean the fly girl or the fox?

I was cracking up when I heard that!
I found a page with a lot of ideas: List Of Funny Phone Numbers To Call That Actually Work In 2021

That's a shame!
It really is. I'm imagining there were some gems outside the chart in the latter part of the decade.

Maurice White's Stand By Me peaked at #50 in October 1985. The song was written by Jerry Lieber, Mike Stoller and former Drifters lead singer Ben E. King in 1961. King's original version (recorded October 27, 1960) reached #4 in June 1961. A re-release of the song – it was used as the title song of a movie starring Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix – got to #9 in December 1986. There were also chart versions of Stand By Me by Earl Grant in 1975, Spyder Turner in 1966, David & Jimmy Ruffin in 1970, John Lennon in 1975, Mickey Gilley in 1980 and 4 The Cause in 1998.

Stand By Me has been recorded by more than 300 other artists including Gene Chandler, Little Eva, Little Milton, Cassius Clay, Freddy Weller, Ry Cooder, Seal, Dwight Twilley, Barbara Lewis, Otis Redding, Otis Rush, Carl Carlton, Billy Joe Royal, Gene Clark, P.J. Proby, Meat Loaf, Julian Lennon, David Hasselhoff, Tracy Chapman, Aaron Neville, Sonny & Cher, Ike & Tina Turner, Cheap Trick, the Searchers, the Kingsmen, Jay & the Americans, Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs and the Kidz Bop Kids. Of course the Kidz Bop Kids seem to have have recorded almost every song written in the past 60 years!

Jackie Wilson recorded Stand By Me for his 1983 album S.R.O. A decade earlier, he performed it live, along with Lonely Teardrops, That's Why and Higher & Higher on an episode of Don Kirshner's Friday-night TV series ABC In Concert. Enjoy!

Richard Marx "Right Here Waiting"
Steve Winwood "Roll With It"
Guns N Roses "Sweet Child O Mine"
So I put the wrong summer ballad from Richard Marx, it was supposed to be "Hold On To The Nights" ("Waiting" is Aug 89). Glad I didn't go with that one!

MISSING FROM MY LIST
Bobby McFerrin "Don't Worry Be Happy" #15
Phil Collins "A Groovy Kind Of Love" #52

Okay 12
Bad 18

40: WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET – BRENDA K. STARR
38: SAYIN’ SORRY (DON’T MAKE IT RIGHT) – DENISE LOPEZ

First time on the countdown for these two?

Also, Alan said Denise released a song in 1984 as Nancy Gee (it actually was Nancy Dee) and then was a member of Dawn Patrol (it actually was Love Patrol). Makes me miss 'lasvegaskid' on the old xmfan forum, who would point out several mistakes every week. Finally, the last spoken line of this song made me chuckle: "I can take only so much. And I have taken as much as I intend to take."

27: PLEASE DON’T GO GIRL – NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Not a surprise but only good song on bottom feeders this week.
#61 Midnight Oil "The Dead Heart"
#80 Foreigner "Heart Turns To Stone"
#94 10,000 Maniacs "What's The Matter Here?"
#100 Run DMC "Mary, Mary"

I also like these ones. The top one I didn't discover until SXM. The bottom one didn't grow on me until years later, and it's still just okay.

13 out of 40. Kind of a stinker this week, then I looked at the time frame for the countdown.
