Maurice White's Stand By Me peaked at #50 in October 1985. The song was written by Jerry Lieber, Mike Stoller and former Drifters lead singer Ben E. King in 1961. King's original version (recorded October 27, 1960) reached #4 in June 1961. A re-release of the song – it was used as the title song of a movie starring Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix – got to #9 in December 1986. There were also chart versions of Stand By Me by Earl Grant in 1975, Spyder Turner in 1966, David & Jimmy Ruffin in 1970, John Lennon in 1975, Mickey Gilley in 1980 and 4 The Cause in 1998.
