80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

So you vacationed in hell..... Got it..... Were the rooms nice?
Even though this was my 2nd honeymoon, it was still over 20 years ago. So when they opened the beach bar at 10:30 each morning, they'd launch into a pre-recorded loop of music. I don't know if it was an iPod or a cassette tape, but it had about 90 minutes of music, and Hot Hot Hot would come up twice. It was on the beach at an all-inclusive resort in Aruba, so it was anything but hellish. The only downside was the withdrawal we suffered when we came home. The music made it worse.

I went to a show at a local club years ago and between each band, the sound guy would just hit play on his iPod or whatever and the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack would play from the start - again. And again. And again.... The exact same songs in the same order between each band. So effin lazy.

25: THIS COULD BE THE NIGHT - LOVERBOY

3: SARA - STARSHIP

My shot at guessing #1. I also had the #2 and #1 as potential guesses (and #10 and #29). So a good week for me.

2: HOW WILL I KNOW - WHITNEY HOUSTON

My friend's son, who for the 33 weeks we've been playing this game has always at least been on the Hot 100 with his guess, pulled the same mistake I've made a few times and named the right artist, but the wrong single. He picked "Greatest Love Of All", which hadn't charted yet.

1: KYRIE - MR. MISTER

My friend's roommate's guess for #1. That's 4 weeks in a row for him.

Will never reach the top 40
#44 Dan Seals "Bop"
#51 Meli'sa Morgan "Do Me Baby"
#52 Sam Harris "I'd Do It All Again"

#98 Scritti Politti "Wood Beez"
#99 Alarm "Strength"
#100 Ray Parker Jr "One Sunny Day"

I thought I was the only one that knew this song. I liked it, but didn't think it would have made it that far up the charts.

I thought this would have gone much higher, maybe not to 40, but much higher.

I guess this was a late bloomer.

These are current weeks positions not peaks.

44 Dan Seals "Bop"

This is the only real surprise in this list considering it did so well on the country charts and I had thought it to be a crossover hit. Apparently not a very big one.

Also considering that this is sung by the 'England Dan' part of England Dan and John Ford Coley duo (remember "I'd really love to see you tonight?") thought maybe that might be something that would push it in to the top 40. Guess not.

3: SARA - STARSHIP

Had this on Vinyl back in the day, bought it mainly for 'We Built This City'. (Yes, I was a nerd!)

HOW WILL I KNOW - WHITNEY HOUSTON

Also had this one on cassette, along with a small crush on Whitney Houston at the time (did for a long time up until her untimely death).

17: R.O.C.K. IN THE U.S.A. - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

This is like the 'Jack and Diane' of the Scarecrow album. Ok song, but a little overplayed, and there are other songs from that particular album I'd much rather hear.

27: (HOW TO BE A) MILLIONAIRE – ABC

THIS CHARTED???? I figured it was one of those songs that never saw the Top 40. One of my favorites by this band.

@HecticArt

Rokkin with Dokken peaked at #77.

@IdRatherBeSkiing

Yeah I notice it bounces around a little. Those little discrepancies in my good/bad/uglyokay amuse me, and intrigue me.

@Jon

I didn't realize that was England Dan, interesting. Almost a top 40 for him.

As for Jonny Cougar, on Uh-Huh the "overplayed good song but not as good as some others" is "Pink Houses". I like "Play Guitar", "Crumblin Down", "Serious Business" & "Warmer Place To Sleep" more.

And I was also surprised to learn a few years ago that "Millionaire" was a top 40 hit. I never heard it back in '86. First time I heard it was 1990 when a friend played the whole album (including the uncensored version of "A to Z"). And I'm also a nerd, because I own "Be Near Me" on 12" vinyl, and have "Poison Arrow" / "Look Of Love" on double 7" (which I can't find on Discogs).

My two cents (with a wooden nickel) for the week:

39: TENDER LOVE - FORCE M.D.'S
I'm sure this got a push from the Krush Groove soundtrack.

35: HE'LL NEVER LOVE YOU (LIKE I DO) - FREDDIE JACKSON
I'm surprised this peaked at 25.

34: NIGHT MOVES - MARILYN MARTIN
I didn't remember this one, but it sounds pretty good.

27: (HOW TO BE A) MILLIONAIRE – ABC
@sadchild - I saw your comment regarding this album. I had the cassette and I remember the line you mentioned. :-)

13: TARZAN BOY – BALTIMORA
I read recently the front man didn't sing the song and lip-synced at performances.

Will never reach the top 40
#51 Meli'sa Morgan "Do Me Baby"
I'm surprised to see this so high on the chart. The original was recorded by Prince.

#52 Sam Harris "I'd Do It All Again"
I had no idea Sam hit the 100 more than once.

#58 Pat Benatar "Le Bel Age"
I would have thought Pat would make the 40.

#59 Five Star "Let Me Be The One"
Another one of the rare sightings of Five Star in the 100.

#61 Phyllis Nelson "I Like You"
"I Like You" was a dance hit. She had a record called "Move Closer" that hit #1 in the UK, but didn't chart anywhere in the US.

#63 Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew "The Super Bowl Shuffle"
I wonder if Beavis can make appearances in the "Will never reach the 40" area.

#67 Jennifer Rush "The Power Of Love"
Celine had a massive hit with this one years later. Jennifer had more success with this overseas.

#68 Alisha "Baby Talk"
This was a big dance hit.

#76 Divinyls "Pleasure And Pain"
Cool to see the Divinyls made an appearance on the 100 during this time.

#77 Firm "All the King's Horses"
I didn't know this group sang Radioactive too. I hadn't heard that song in years.

#81 Eurythmics "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)"
Another really good Eurythmics song.

#83 Isley Jasper Isley "Caravan Of Love"
This was a big R&B hit and was remade by the UK's HouseMartins. I don't think the HouseMartins had any exposure in the US.

#87 Klymaxx "The Men All Pause"
A classic Kylmaxx track (along with "Meeting in the Ladies Room").

#92 Laura Branigan "I Found Someone"
Cher put this in the one the radar.

#98 Scritti Politti "Wood Beez"
Interesting to see this on the 100.

#100 Ray Parker Jr "One Sunny Day"
Helen Terry sang on this track with Ray Parker Jr. She sang on Culture Club's "Church of the Poison Mind".
@sadchild - speaking of Culture Club. I saw your A-Team comment on Twitter. I found a clip on YouTube, but would love to see the entire episode.
