By 1963 the oldies genre was getting stale, thank the heavens the British Invasion would start soon enough.

A few music critics have said that rock'n'roll in the United States would have died if not for the so-called "British invasion" of 1964. Really? In 1963 we had Dion, Chuck Berry, Lou Christie, Lonnie Mack, Duane Eddy, Jackie Wilson, Roy Orbison, Rick Nelson, Brenda Lee, Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Peggy March, Elvis Presley, Bobby Rydell, Neil Sedaka, Little Eva, Chubby Checker, Gene Pitney, Connie Francis, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Dee Dee Sharp, Johnny Tillotson, Angels, Dovells, Dartells, Orlons, Chiffons, Crystals, Exciters, Surfaris, Rebels, Kingsmen, Ronettes, Rocky Fellers, Beach Boys, Four Seasons, Jan & Dean, Randy & the Rainbows, Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs.....we were doing just fine, thank you.

My favorite song of 1963 is Randy & the Rainbows' Denise, which got to #10 on the Hor 100 in August.

This was about the time Elvis Presley was in the Army, and about a year before the Beatles showed up, so Rock wasn't all that interesting.

While Elvis Presley was in the Army – March 24, 1958 to March 2, 1960 – RCA Victor released these singles:

April 1, 1958: Wear My Ring Around Your Neck/Doncha Think It's Time
June 10, 1958: Hard Headed Woman/Don't Ask Me Why
October 21, 1958: One Night/I Got Stung
March 10, 1959: A Fool Such As I/I Need Your Love Tonight
June 23, 1959: A Big Hunk O' Love/My Wish Came True

All ten of those songs were top-30 hits, seven were top-ten, and two –Hard Headed Woman and A Big Hunk O' Love went to number one. In 1963, Elvis had only two top-ten hits, Devil In Disguise and Bossa Nova Baby.

I know nobody has asked to hear the original version of Tip-Toe Thru The Tulips With Me so here it is. It's by singer/banjoist/guitarist Nick Lucas, "The Crooning Troubador," and was number one for ten weeks in October-November-December 1929. Lucas sang the song in the musical comedy Gold Diggers Of Broadway. He co-starred with Winnie Lightner in the Technicolor film. A version of the song by Frank Munn & The Jean Goldkette Orchestra reached #5 in November 1929. A version by Johnny Marvin got to #11 and a version by Al Bowlly & The Roy Fox Orchestra got to #29.

As an example of the adage that there are two sides to every story, here is Bobby Comstock & The Counts' Your Boyfriend's Back, an answer song to the Angels' My Boyfriend's Back. This debuted at #100 on the September 14 1963 Hot 100, rose to #98 the following week – and then dropped off.
