I live in a Kroger town. There are five within two miles of my house, I think. Two of them are less than 1/4 mile apart, and both are always packed.

Grocery store wars have been going on here for a while. Privately owned markets are almost extinct. I think we have a handful left after WM neighborhood markets sprang up a couple years ago. Price Cutter is holding it's own while three Dillons (Kroger owned) close on 12-24. Price Cutter is buying the properties and should reopen two of the four buildings.

A Kansas City based Hyvee is killing things and probably caused the Dillons closing after they built a place across the street from the largest grossing Dillons.

We use to have one Albertson's buy they went bye bye and PC set up shop.

Target opened its first stores in Canada in 2013, so not that big a deal to shut them down in 2015.

Plus, there's no way they could go up against this.

I have couple of radio shacks near me, I never go there anymore. It will be a bit sad if they go, he'll a blockbuster video finally shut down around the near me and that was less than a year ago.

I stop in a few times a year, but rarely spend more than $20 or $30. I'd rather buy from a "local" shop than the Web when I can help it.

130 stores is a boatload of startup capital. I've got no real numbers to work with, but wouldn't be surprised if it cost them $30 million or more to build each store if they were all ground up. That could be close to 4 billion dollars. Even if I'm waaaay off, it's a big chunk of cash.

It wasn't ground up. They bought them from Zellers in 2011 for 1.8 billion Canadian dollars (which was aboot the same as US dollars in 2011).

Apparently Zellers was kind of down market, in some shady locations, so Target didn't enjoy the same "we're better than Wal-mart" prestige they have down here.

Thanks for your mad Google-Fu skills and the translation into Canadian. :)

I can't quite fathom a billion dollars, but 1.6 of em sounds like a lot to me.
It also sounds like Target made a bad choice for their introduction to a new market. Stockholders should not be pleased.
