2 Broke Girls.

Do you have any of the streaming services like Netflix etc.? Did you ever have HBO or get into shows in the past (other than TBBT)?

I'd ask you what you do instead of watching TV, but I already know you attend a crazy amount of live events, so no need to wonder. And I'm sure you fill-in the extra moments with books and newspapers.
Ok, I never watched that show but may have seen 1/2 an episode somewhere or the previews.

We have Netflix, Crave, Disney+, Prime.

When I watch it's usually older shows so not current year. I don't watch their current show fair.

I also still have an extensive DVD collection. I have several series on DVD which I will sometimes rewatch -- "Remingon Steele", "WKRP", "TBBT" to name the big ones that I watch most often.

It was an OK show for a bit. But I just liked it for the clearly obvious attempt at marketing to a male audience.

"Ok, so what if one of dem was a tall, leggy blonde?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah - and da udder one is like a buxom, voluptuous brunette!"

"So all da guys tuning in, they can pick dare favorite!"

"Dats TV gold right dare!!"

They should have marketed it better and had them working at Hooters with appropriate costumes.

I started to watch Shifting Gears and turned it off after ten minutes. The fake canned laughter was too annoying. I enjoyed watching Fresh Off The Boat (2015-20) and Stuck In The Middle (2016-18) because there was no canned laughter. We're not in the 1950s anymore. Why does almost every sitcom still use canned laughter?

That was annoying. My son was more annoyed than I was.

That is another show – one of many – that, because of the obnoxious canned laughter, I watched only a few minutes of.

I Love Lucy was filmed before a live audience and never used canned laughter – but the audience's laughter, including a woman who says "Uh-oh," was recorded and used as laugh tracks on other CBS sitcoms. The "Uh-oh" woman was Lucille Ball's mother, Désirée "DeDe" Ball, who attended the filming of every episode.

I Love Lucy: CBS actually reused the hit show's laughter

My friend had Big Bang Theory on at his house, so I caught about five minutes. Not only was it not a funny show, but the laugh track is obnoxious.
TBBT is actually filmed in front of a live audience. They may have laugh signs but it's not a track.

Somebody named Jacob – who doesn't seem to like capital letters – wrote this on Quora:

"The big bang theory is filmed in front of a live studio audience. A laugh track is used to enhance the sound of the audience laughing, as they don't usually have microphones in the seating area to capture the sound."

Odd. If you go to the trouble of having an audience why not make them good for something?

"Whose Line Is It Anyway" also adds a lot of canned laughter. It is very obvious when there are shots of the audience and hardly anyone is laughing.

America's Funniest Home Videos, which is now in its 35th season, also uses canned laughter to augment the few giggles and titters of the studio audience. I quit watching the show after a few years when it became obvious many of the slips, trips, pratfalls, accidents and stunts-gone-wrong were staged.

I'll just go ahead and repeat a story I've told before. I was traveling on the west coast with a friend in '96, and we were in Disneyland or Universal in LA, where we were offered to see a taping of "Ink", the post-Cheers comedy starring Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.

We were driven miles away to some studio set, where we had to endure about 4 hours of taping. It was all done on film, and each scene had to be shot at least twice - but typically needed 4 or 5 takes. In addition, their TV show bulldog was in the episode, so that required a lot of retakes. And each time they redid a scene, we had to laugh like it was the first time. I think they used the laughter from different takes as necessary.

When we arrived at the studio, we were elated to be there. The director came out, and all the actors said "hi". And they had a guy that got the audience revved-up. But after several hours of being stuck in our seats with no water, having to endure retake after retake, we felt like we were being held captive. We had no idea where we were, and had no way to get back to the theme park. They drove us all back when it was over. The show got cancelled after one season.

We went to see a taping of a Canadian sitcom. It had some known stars but I cannot remember the stars or the name of the show. Like you every scene had 2 takes. Never more than 2. It was mildly amusing in the first take. I wanted to see the episode as it aired on TV but I watched the pilot and it was pretty bad and I think it got cancelled after 4 episodes. I think we watched episode 8 or something.

Same with us. Best I could determine, the show went on "hiatus" before the episode aired.

In contrast, the taping we saw of The Late Show with David Letterman occurred 100% in real-time. Even the pre-recorded bits were inserted into the show as it aired. We were able to see them on TV monitors. It also seemed like they broke for the planned commercial breaks in real-time too. The band would finish the song they started as it was cut to commercial. And then they'd start the next song before they returned on-air. Of course, Dave was swarmed by writers and production people during the breaks.

And the only instruction given to the audience was to "just laugh and applaud". No yelling, no whistling; as they would screw-up the recording levels, and cheapen the feel of the broadcast.

A friend and I tried to see Letterman. We were #50 & 51 on the standby list. They took 10. We flipped for which one would get in if they cut off at 50. I lost the coin toss but it did not come to that.
To get a pre-reservation (not the actual reservation) by phone, I had to answer a trivia question. And then we stood outside the theater at a certain time, with the pre-reservation info. That got us a number to stand on a 2nd line at a later time. And from that line, they picked people to get into the theater. We ended up pretty close to the stage, just a few rows back, and close to the band.

We saw a taping of Colbert. It was a lot of fun. We sat 2 or 3 rows behind his wife.
It was the same set up as Letterman, but we never managed to get to see him.
Everything was real-time scheduled, but they had an entertainer guest (not a band) that they had taped at an earlier date but couldn't use for some reason. That was the last segment that aired with our taping. I can't remember the specifics for that part. I'll have to look for the episode to remember more.

The most important entertainment news of my year. Still have 6 of the 10 best pic nominees I need to see. They’re holding them longer in theaters than they were during the pandemic years. I’d rather not rent when the films are at $20 rental price, so I’ll wait a bit on some of them as the Awards ceremony gets closer.
