We'd like to go to movie today but nothing sounds good. I heard Jurassic Park isn't very good and Momma Mia hasn't been released yet. Don't know

Here we go again. :p

It's been over two weeks since I saw a movie in a theater. I watched some at home to get me through, but I was white knuckling it toward the end. Tonight I got healthy.

I saw "976-EVIL" at the new Alamo Drafthouse. The film was fascinating. It demanded a lot of thought on the part of the audience (for a 1980s horror flick) and had Sandy Dennis eaten by house cats. I love Sandy Dennis and I love seeing her eaten by house cats.

The new Drafthouse is spectacular. Huge draft selection. Huge whiskey selection. Big bar, restaurant and patio. Gorgeous projection. "976-EVIL" never looked so good. Big comfy seats with motorized recline. Large individual tables on each seat with a light, menu holder and purse hook under each one. And the carpet from "The Shining".

Saw Solo. Was ok. They completely messed up the timeline though. They had the empire, storm troopers and darth maul. Since maul was killed in 1 this is impossible.

My daughter found the official explanation on the internet is that maul didn't really die in 1. This is more stupid than just admitting you fucked up. If he lived the emperor would not have been searching for another Darth.

If they aren't going to be true to the timelines it is probably wise they stop these little side movies.

1, 2 and 3 sucked. Pretend they never happened. "Solo" was fun and that's what matters. Not trade negotiations or mitochondria or timelines.

The carpet is the first thing I noticed. I recently saw it (at least it was similar) in another movie. It was clearly a nod to the Shining.

We really need an Alamo. People were annoying me when we saw Jurassic last week.

Today Mrs. Bag and I went to the Alamo Drafthouse Top Brass party. They gave us a tour of the projection area and showed off the new Sony SRX815 laser projectors. They gave us $60 for food and beverages. They gave us a gift bag with a Jurassic World pint glass, a small plastic horse and a metal coin commemorating the opening of the new theater.

Then they showed us "Sorry to Bother You", a brilliant political comedy from Boots Riley starring Lakeith Stanfield. Great movie. Maybe my favorite this year. If you see it you will understand the inclusion of the small plastic horse.

Then we went home, got Memegirl and brought her back to the theater to watch "Won't You Be My Neighbor?". That made me cry a lot.

I'm seeing a free sneak preview of "Skyscraper" on Monday. No movies tomorrow because that would be 4 days in a row and that's just excessive. But I might sneak out late to see "Ant-Man and The Wasp".

I just saw Ant-Man and The Wasp and the movie fantastic. Normally Marvel sequels are not that great besides Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But the film has a lot of comedy, good action and the CGI was really good. The film has two post-credits and one directly ties into Infinity War.

Was it "Toy Story"?

I can't go to other theaters anymore. There is a projectionist on duty at the Alamo. An actual human being who knows how to operate the equipment. If something goes wrong he is there to fix it right away. As far back as the 90s I received multiple refunds when a movie crapped out and the theater staff told me the projectionist for the region was currently in another city.

I'll see if the Mrs remembers what movie we noticed the Shining carpet. It was live action, and a close version of it, not an exact copy. It was an obvious nod though.

My big beef with regular theaters is that people don't shut the hell up when the film is playing. One of these days I'm going to hush a dude that's bigger than me.

That's one of my beefs with substandard theaters. Other beefs:
  1. Dim projection.
  2. Dirty screens.
  3. Sound channels distorted or entirely missing.
  4. Bad beer selection.
  5. No whiskey selection at all.
  6. Bad food.
  7. No projectionist on duty.
  8. Shit movies.
  9. They don't give me free movies, free/discounted food, special parties, secret screenings and they don't let me pick movies to show.

There are many categories of annoying people (and this applies to concerts too):
Using cell phones with white-hot 6.5" screens;
kicking back of seat;
constantly going in and out of the rows;
6'10" guy sits in front of you.

I'm 6'-4", but I try to slouch into the seat. At least out theater has the taller stadium style seats.
I can't do much to help the people behind me at concerts other than try not to shift back and forth too much.
