They don't make a lot of money in the UK because the BBC is like their PBS. The big market is the US, where they can sell stuff and show a profit.

yea they do weird stuff over there with publicly funded tv. with doctor who there was a story awhile back about how some politicians wanted to cut funding cause they spent too much on the show. in just the last week or so there was another story about how the other normal channels are jealous of their success and want them to be forced to air doctor who and other hit shows in time slots that would not compete with the private channels.

The new Top Gear premiered in the US last night. It was horrible. I couldn't make it through the whole thing. Chris Evans is annoying and Matt LeBlanc is boring. Sabine Schmitz was the high point of the show. Everything else was the low point.
Agreed, can't wait til The Grand Tour premiers on Amazon.

Can't wait for 'The Grand Tour', if it weren't for that I probably wouldn't bother with Amazon video.

not sure what to make of this show yet. the pilot was enough for me to watch it a few more weeks.

there are a few promising new shows coming out right now.

here is one from the walking dead guy...

and here is a dual aussie/us show that just started on sundance. a politically charged sifi drama that looks like it could be cool.

I saw "The Nice Guys" last night because there was absolutely nothing I wanted to see showing, but I still wanted to go to the Alamo. I was pleasantly surprised. It starred Fat Russel Crow and a man I've heard of but never seen before, Ryan Gosling, as 70s private dicks. Fat Russel Crowe's super power is he can beat the shit out of absolutely anyone. So not a big stretch for him. There's a bunch of plot about porn and conspiracies, and Kim Bassinger, but mostly it's about the 1970s. I enjoyed it the way I wanted to enjoy "American Hustle".

I also got to try a Stone Epic Vertical Ale 08.08.08. That was yummy.

The Help was depressing in the same way.

ok, roots part 1 was rough but nowhere near as bad as i expected. its much more stylized than 12 years with less horror like grit.

The Help was depressing in the same way.

thats one where i read the book (well, audio book) and saw the movie and i barely remember it. all i remember is the relationship btw the girl and the servant and the shit pie. i gotta watch that film again.

just finished all 4 parts of the new roots. it was ok. mostly sad, as expected, but nowhere near as powerful as 12 years. this was a tv movie and it felt like it. more smoothed over around the edges. 12 years was more or less a real life horror movie. this was the ultra lite version.

2 things did stand out.

at one point kuntas grandson becomes known for cockfighting. the fighting scenes were really well done. it made me wonder how they filmed them. with all the regulations there is no way a major, main stream production like this could actually have roosters fight so it was probably a combo of very good editing/cutting and maybe cgi.

about 20 mins from the end of part 4 it took a turn. spirituality and 'roots' or family ties were big themes throughout but then they go and have a kunta spirit appear to his great grandson and guide him to safety. it just threw the whole thing off for me for them to randomly throw in a supernatural element seemingly out of nowhere after 5 hours.
