#278 Peter Gabriel "Mercy Street"

I don't know what he's singing about in this song (he was inspired by a poet who committed suicide in the 70s). But even if the song as a whole doesn't make sense to me, the individual lines paint a soothing, beautiful picture - but on a cold, dark canvas.

Great song, great album.

#279 Sublime "What I Got"

I'm not sure it's possible to dislike this song. Somehow they pulled off 'bad-ass' AND 'feel-good' at the same time.

It's not possible.

I used to listen to that disk a lot, but it's been a while.

#277 Rolling Stones "Waiting On A Friend"

This came out back before I was dating, when hanging out with my pals was all I wanted to do. Girls? Nah. Where are my dudes at? It spoke to me then, and still speaks to me today in a nostalgic way. Like when I'm at a restaurant or movie theater just waiting for some old high school buddies to show up. It brings me back to the carefree days of a simple life, and warms my heart without being overly sentimental.

The video is even worse.
There is that, it may have influenced me back in the day.
Sublime is a uniquely cool band, but classic alternative radio has been trying to kill them by playing the shit out of them (and RHCP).
Fortunately, I haven’t let radio kill those bands for me.
Once I realized radio could do that, I became proactive and started changing stations before burnout sets in.

YES! The "Waiting On A Friend" video is terrible. Especially Mick's odd dancing at the end.

YES! FM killed Sublime. I love "What I Got" but I never listen to it on purpose anymore (it's one of dozens of songs I have to stay away from because I've been overhearing it for decades now). And I don't go out of my way for any other old Sublime songs, not my thing. I prefer Reel Big Fish (their last two albums are great).

BUT! Sublime with Rome has good stuff that I do go out of my way for:
Sublime with Rome - Goodbyes.mp3
Sublime with Rome - Light On.mp3
Sublime with Rome - Panic.mp3
Sublime with Rome - Wherever You Go.mp3

YES! I change the channel too when I song I like starts getting overplayed. Had to do that with Walk The Moon "Shut Up And Dance" a few years back. Sure it's good song but I don't need to hear it every two flippin' hours!

I like Waiting on a Friend. Song is better than the video. Probably in my top dozen Stones songs.

Santeria is my favorite from Sublime.
You guys are probably sick of that one.

#276 Poison "Something To Believe In (Acoustic Version)"

We probably all remember the original "Something To Believe In". I like that one, but the b-side to "Life Goes On" is an acoustic version with different lyrics that hit much harder. And I find they're even more moving as I get older.

I hated Poison the first time I saw him throwing guitars around on the Talk Dirty video.
I had to save every dollar I could scrounge up to buy my first guitar. I thought that was disrespectful.
After that, I picked on everything about them, the makeup, hair, clothes, etc.

@HecticArt I don't blame ya! When I first saw the cover to their debut album I thought "DAMN that's a lot of makeup!!" But I did dig their music (1986 - 1991 anyway).

#275 Police "Tea In The Sahara"

This one always intrigued me. And I found myself going back to it again and again. There's actually a number of "intriguing last songs on a album" that I should make of list of someday. Duran "Chauffeur" is another one (on my 500+ but not in the 333).

Good album, interesting song choice. I'm actually not familiar enough with the song to know what they're saying, except it's in the title of the song. For me, this song coming on was an indication that it was time to put on another record. :D

"Mother" definitely should have been a b-side!!

I thought I'd started a list of album songs that should have been b-sides, but I can't find it.

"Act Of Contrition" on Madge's Like A Prayer is another one (not that I've ever listened to the album front to back, but my friend had the "Like A Prayer" cassingle and that disaster was the flipside. Then I later learned they actually put it on the album too and said WTF?)

Oh, and as for Synchronicity, I didn't hear "Murder By Numbers" until years later. I guess it was on the CD, the cassette, even the 8-track ... but not the vinyl. Similar thing happened to me with Dire Straits Money For Nothing . I owned the vinyl, but some of the songs were longer when I bought the CD years later, like "Why Worry" for example. The song kept going past 'the end' and I went 'huh...?'

Are you refering to the album "Brothers In Arms" from Dire Straits? That was the quintessential album to have on CD. I think it was the first with the DDD designation. All digital from start to finish. Seems almost sacrilegious to buy that on vinyl.

The need to limit time and balance sides on a tape or a vynil records is how Rush got their only top 40 single. New World Man was added to balance the A & B side in length at the last minute. That decision gave them their only top 40.

On Tom Petty's album Full Moon Fever, he added a little speech at the end of Running Down The Dream on how he was going to pause to allow those on records or cassettes to flip the record or tape. Kind of funny.
