#55 Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus"

Possibly my favorite CD single I've ever bought b/w my #100 song "Dangerous" and fantastic remixes/alt versions of both songs (minus Hazchemix which sucks). Below is the 7" version with the very cool original ending (though the LP version with some of the Pump Mix appended is quite cool too).

The even-better version, with extra lyrics:

#52 Gary Numan "Cars"

The music was groundbreaking to me, especially at 10 years old. And I've always been able to relate to the dilemma of wanting to stay away from people, yet still requiring social interaction.

I think he thought he was going to be mugged and found refuse in his car and it gave him the inspiration.

Yep that was the inspiration behind it.

I find most songs have:
1. The inspiration
2. The meaning

And they aren't always the same

For example, Van Halen "Jump"...

The original inspiration for the lyrics came from David Lee Roth watching a person on TV who was threatening to commit suicide by jumping off of a building and Roth figured someone in the crowd must be thinking, “Go ahead and jump”. It was, however, not written about suicide – the song is about ‘jumping’ on the opportunity to hook up with someone.

#51 Machine Head "Davidian"

"Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast!" One of the best metal albums of all time. Speaking of inspiration vs meaning, this was inspired by the Waco shootout between Branch Davidians and the ATF, but the meaning is more about vengeance, hate and no sympathy for those who have mistreated you (that's what I get out of it anyway).

#49 John Cougar/Mellencamp "Jack And Diane"

As a teen and into my early 20s, this song always reminded me to be young wild & free while I was still young wild & free. Enjoy the moment, do stuff, be that age, live those experiences, bask in the freedom, revel in the hijinx, enjoy those "first-times". This little ditty was loaded with wisdom... changes would come around real soon and make me an adult -- and I saw that most adults weren't having as much fun anymore. Thanks John (and to Rush in "Time Stand Still" too!) for telling me to experience the now fully, before "now" becomes the "glory days".

#47 Red Hot Chili Peppers "Fight Like A Brave"

Thank you Steven Tyler for introducing me to this band back in the summer of '89 with this video on MTV's Hard 30. I happened to be videotaping, so I brought the tape to a friend's house and said, "We've gotta go get this record now!!" And then we did.

Isn't "What About Me?" one of those weird ones, where it was kind of a hit in the early '80's & then outta nowhere became a bigger hit in the late 80's?
