Orton's story is an interesting one.

At 19, Orton was invited to a party by an actress she was in a play with – a party thrown by producer William Orbit, who immediately became ‘obsessed’ with her. The two dated, and Orbit insisted she work with him – even flying to Thailand, when she’d became a Buddhist nun after her mother died, to convince her to return to the UK.

Their 1993 song “Water From A Vine Leaf” was a minor UK hit. The same year, the two also released “Don’t Wanna Know ‘bout Evil” under the name Spill – a song that later appeared on Superpinkymandy, a collection of downtempo electronic songs produced by Orbit and only released in Japan that is often not acknowledged as her first album.

Orton appeared on two songs on The Chemical Brothers' UK top 10 album Exit Planet Dust in 1995. By then, Orbit ‘wasn’t really into’ the songs Orton was writing at the time, so she formed a band and released a cover of The Ronettes song “I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine”. Her 1996 album Trailer Park followed and found success in the UK including her first top 40 song “She Cries Your Name”.
Very interesting!

Billy Squier

Genre: rock

Discovered: FM? Friends?

Other: Many people say the video for "Rock Me Tonite" killed his career. Yes it was horrendous, but I still liked and bought his 1989 album Hear & Now. In fact, it's the only one I listen to start to finish, every track is good.

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Stroke
2. Don't Say You Love Me
3. Everybody Wants You
4. All Night Long
5. The Big Beat

I heard that early on, when she was in the Sugarcubes, she didn't know any English, so she sang phonetically.

Black Sabbath

Genre: (40 years ago) metal, (today) classic rock

Discovered: No idea

Other: Another band I respect more than I actually listen to. I enjoy covers of their songs more than the originals -- Faith No More "War Pigs", Megadeth "Paranoid", Type O Negative "Black Sabbath", White Zombie "Children Of The Grave", 1000 Homo DJs "Supernaut (Trent Reznor Vocal)". When we had a male singer, we covered "Symptom" and had a blast doing it.

HIGH FIVE:

1. War Pigs
2. Paranoid
3. Black Sabbath
4. Symptom Of The Universe
5. Iron Man

HIGH FIVE:

1. Lonely Train
2. Like I Roll
3. Backwoods Gold
4. The Rambler

Blink 182

Genre: pop punk, alt rock

Discovered: Don't remember, but it was "Dammit".

Other: Not a fan, actually. But I do like these five songs. Maybe another 1 or 2 are alright. But in general, not a fan. Robert Smith of The Cure was asked to do a song with these guys, and he did. Later when asked about it, he said, "I borrowed some albums of them and I started listening to them and I actually thought they had some really, really good songs. I thought some of it was awful, and some of the songs were really sort of crass." Yup.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Dammit (Growing Up)
2. Adam's Song
3. I Won't Be Home For Christmas
4. Bored To Death
5. Happy Holidays You Bastard

blondie.jpg

Blondie

Genre: pop rock, alt rock, new wave

Discovered: Probably "Tide Is High" on FM or its weird video with the Darth Vader lookalike.

Other: Not sure I should include her because #5 below is tough to say I like. I can kinda enjoy it, but certainly won't say it's good. My fav Blondie song doesn't sound like the classic chart-topping punkish/new-wave Blondie. I think it was supposed to be their comeback song, but only peaked at #82. It did, however, reach #1 in the UK.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Maria
2. The Tide is High
3. Heart of Glass
4. One Way Or Another
5. Rapture
