Work Gripes

It's confirmed now. My boss is leaving. There was some major incident at work today that I'll talk about in a second, but it was bad enough that it made him call me. And once he did that then we got to talking and he was like yeah be cool man but they wouldn't give me the raise I wanted so I put in my two weeks I'm going to another storage place where they're paying me a lot more for the same job. So that's a bummer. I really like this guy so I told him hey man if you can give me an apartment I'll follow you cuz you're a great boss but the place he's going to doesn't have apartments.

Anyway, he's checked out but he had to call me because I had a fucking chick OD at a property today. On Fridays I spend half my day at a different property which is technically in a nicer neighborhood and this chick fucking OD'd. It was nuts. Ambulance showed up. Fire truck showed up. They hauled her off and that was that it wasn't really a big deal. She didn't die I'm pretty sure. She was awake when they put her in the ambulance.

So that was fucking nuts. First time I've ever seen something like that. You'd think with who I am I'd be more familiar with that shit but I'm not cuz I can handle my drugs bitch.

Anyway, that was a lot of fun.

Tamarac is a nicer city than North Lauderdale yet I've never had anyone OD at my fucking property in North Laud.

I am kind of surprised that this is the first time you have had something untaward happen at you work place. Every second episode of "Criminal Minds" involved something bad happening at a storage locker.

I get someone living in their unit maybe once or twice a year. That's about par for every storage place except for the ones in the real fancy areas, like the one we have in Parkland.

It's a real bummer to kick them out. I mean if shit's so bad you're living in a fucking storage unit. And yeah haha. I live in Astoria Tina too whatever.... I'm really kicking someone when they're down by giving him the boot.

There's a fucking hell hole property 3 mi from me and they getting people sleeping in their units about twice a week or more. I had to work that property one day a week last summer and I just bitched at my boss until he got me the fuck out of there.

Besides that there's no real crazy shit that goes on with people.

I had to take a Hazardous Chemical Training refresher, in order to keep my access to the lab areas at work. Note: our labs only contain electronics; there are absolutely no chemicals (other than air and CO2) anywhere to be found. But anyway, I thought this chart summed it up nicely:

There are 2 different hazard rating systems, with the severity levels going in the opposite direction. Additionally, one starts at 0, while the other starts at 1. To me, this pretty-much sums up the corporate world.

YES THIS!

"A problem?"
"Yeah it's a 4"
"Slight hazard. So, not a big deal?"
"NO WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE"

I also like how there's no "No Hazard".

"What's in the room?"
"Just oxygen"
"So a zero?"
"Yeah because technically I could take an airhose, ram it down your throat and overinflate you. But since the chances of it happening are minimal, it's a zero."

If it is pure oxygen it is a big hazzard if you try to light a cigarette.

That is reserved for the schmucks that feel the need to keep asking questions at the end of meetings to make sure everyone knows that they were there and are engaged.......

I occasionally have done. It sort of feels comfortable until either my legs start hurting.

Do you all have the random coworker that keeps the monitors way up high and stands up most of the day? Why are they like this.
We have the option to provide people a stand-up desk. I will have to say, one of the guys who uses one is not a high visibility person at all; it's strictly for his back issues. But I always got the feeling it's for people to say "look at me, I'm so fit and healthy, and I have good posture".

Our office has desks which are adjustable. They can go to standup height or low. I set mine low as it is easier on my shoulder. But there are some people that stand. They are usually younger and don't yet properly understand the benefit of sitting.

We had a wave of people getting those stand up desk things, and most of them have since ditched them. It was a craze or a phase or the hip thing to do or whatever.

Kinda like those ball seats and or those weird kneeling ones. People use them for six months then suddenly realize THIS IS FUCKING STUPID

I used to have a standing desk contraption similar to the one up top, it was quite handy. I usually split time between sitting and standing over the course of a day. When you're in I.T. you're doing a lot of standing anyway, but that's helpful when your documenting or browsing tickets.

My old office used to have the old-school drafting tables.

They were great for working on large drawings, and standing was a lot more comfortable for reaching stuff at the top half of the page.

As more and more work was being done on the computer, those tables weren't needed as much.
I got in the habit of putting my monitors on the drafting table and would raise it up and stand sometimes.

My current desk doesn't lift, and after sitting for several hours, I really miss it.
We're getting new furniture in a couple of weeks, and the new desk will lift.
I'm looking forward to it.

Do you have multiple monitors synced? Because while obviously you can be way more efficient doing it using software, having a giant workspace like that is also an advantage that I hope you didn't lose when shit went digital.

Also architects suck and I don't care. Also Toledo sucks..... Sometimes when I ask actual questions and I'm interested in your job I remember I need to leave an epilogue explaining how it was a temporary lapse in judgment to care.
