This week's subject was folk singer Woody Guthrie, best-known for "This Land is Your Land".

Born in Okemah, Oklahoma July 14, 1912, Guthrie's mother suffered from Huntington's Disease when he was young. He left during the Dust Bowl and worked in California refining his folky image. In 1944, Guthrie authored his 'Land' to counter Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which he hated.

However, by the 1950s, Guthrie's health was deteriorating badly because of Huntington's, which led him to live out the rest of his years institutionalized. He died in 1967 at 55. He was survived by his son Arlo, who is best-known for the Thanksgiving day classic "Alice's Restaurant" and "City of New Orleans".

Long before Macklemore was using the stage to combat fascism, Guthrie did the same with a sticker on his guitar that read "This Machine Kills Fascists".
