TBH, I'm confused about the category, so I don't have any better ideas.

Smokey Bear

ONE CLUE WONDER! ​

Congratulations, Scotchandcigar!

This week's subject was Smokey Bear (not "Smoley Bear", sorry Madison), the beloved icon who loves telling the word that "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires" (and before 2001, Forest Fires).

Smokey was created by the US Forest Service in 1944. However, there was a real Smokey Bear who was discovered at the Capian Mountain fire in 1950 in New Mexico. He spent his life at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.

Smokey was voiced by Jackson Weaver, a popular Washington, DC radio personality who voiced him from 1947 until his death in 1992. Today, he's voiced by Oscar nominated actor Brian Tyree Henry.

Mister scotch and I were confused by the category. Can a "historical figure" be an animal or a fictional character or does the term apply only to people? Here is a lengthy essay on the subject – and now I is even more confused! But I say a "figure" can be an animal, not just a human. It is obvious that kingchuck agrees. And Smokey was real. Congratulations, Mister scotch!

I was hoping it was not the right answer, and we could just move to clue 2. But, given the situation, I would like to officially split a half-win each with Madison. I'd also like him to get the credit for one clue wonder.

As 98 mentioned, I was having problems with the category. Most historical figures are not "created". But you can create a symbol based on a real thing. If it wasn't real, it would be a fictional character.

Examples I came up with included Uncle Sam and Colonel Sanders. But they didn't fit into 1940s. Smokey Bear did. I had no other guess, so I went with Smokey, after seeing Madison's misspelled entry.

I'm not sure if I would've guessed Smokey, if it wasn't for Madison's guess. But I also figured Kingchuck might pass over the misspelling, and then I'd be behind the 8-ball tomorrow. So here we are. Thanks for the game King!

Yes, Listener guessed Rosie the Riveter. Today I learned that the character was originally the subject of a song.
