Today is Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first observed nationally on May 30, 1868 as a day to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers with flowers. Since World War I, it has been a day to mourn and honor all military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In 1971, Congress renamed Decoration Day as Memorial Day and moved its annual observance from May 30 to the last Monday in May.
