Congratulations, Koop!
This week's subject was Robert E. "Shep" Pettibone, the former record producer, songwriter and remixer known for remixing multiple songs.
Pettibone's career began in the disco era in New York City where he made a name for himself as a mix show DJ at several radio stations, including WRKS Kiss 98.7. His Mastermixes attracted many artists, who asked him to remix their hits. Among his credits include David Bowie's "Day In, Day Out", Erasure's "Chains of Love", Run DMC's "It's Tricky" and his excellent 12-inch remix of "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order:
Shep was a longtime protégé of Madonna. He remixed "Like A Prayer", "Express Yourself" and "True Blue". Plus, he helped co-write several of her hits such as "Vogue", "Erotica" and "This Used To Be My Playground".
According to Pettibone, he left the music business because he was pressured by record labels to do more hip-hop remixes, which he was not fond of. So, he purchased the abandoned and crumbling Empress Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ in 1998. The hotel was a popular destination in the 60s and 70s, but had shuttered around 1990. In 1993, it became a strip club, but was a hotbed for drugs and prostitution. Pettibone - who did a crash course on hotel management from a book - converted the Empress into a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.
New game next week!
