Since that trip, I became a more occasional biker. But my friend used that as his launching point to make cycling a big part of his life. He created a side-career where he publishes bike trips that hundreds of people (perhaps thousands) follow.

edit: I found his blog

My childhood work experience - like my professional career - was much less varied. Other than the stint as a paperboy, my only other job outside the family business was a single high-school summer job at a makeshift "Mothercare" catalog mailroom, located in an FAO Schwarz warehouse.

From my junior year in high school ('78) on, I worked for my dad's little electronic PCB assembly business. Any weekday that I wasn't in school, I was there. All the way up until college graduation in '84.
We should start a thread of past jobs. My childhood jobs were much less interesting. The highlight was I got fired from 2 different fast food franchises at different times by the same manager.

August of 1982 would have been after the first house had the fire and we were in the smaller rent house. My parents bought us an Atari to help brighten our spirits. It helped for sure, we played that thing like crazy.

Forgive me but I forget about the fire. WTF???? You're house burned down? How? Can I get a quick recap, I'm sure you've posted about it before.

What Atari games do you remember having?

Not sure if I've ever gone over this. I have a long bad history with fire.

1. When I was around 6, the service people were digging some telephone lines across the street, and something went wrong and it sent a surge up into our attic which caught it on fire. It was mostly contained in the attic, but the whole house had water damage, so we kind of had to re-do the whole thing, although some of the framework was salvageable.

2. Around that same time, my aunt and uncle's house burned down. I don't recall what the cause was.

3. When I was a teenager, our room with the clothes washing machine caught fire. We weren't home but the fire alarm called my dad and he rushed home and put the thing out with the fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived. Mostly just damage to that room.

4. When I was in college, my Aunt and Uncle's (same as above) house burned down again, caused by a cigarette from my young adult cousin, falling asleep smoking. He didn't survive.

5. Maybe 20 years ago, our family business, which we had since sold and wasn't ours anymore burned to the ground.

Despite all of this, I'm not really extra terrified of fire, but I also have this feeling of being resigned to the idea that it will happen again.

Have you ever considered you may be the real life version of Carrie and you don't know how to control it?

Cause that's way too many fire incidents for any 1 normal person.

My sister had/has a second home/cabin in Kelowna, BC. About 3 years ago the sold it and bought one about 2 miles south of that one. 2 years ago there was a huge wildfire that burned down her old house (and neighbourhood). It came within about 1/2 mile of her new house but then the wind changed and she was good.

What an amazingly lucky turn of events.

Why did they buy the second one? Was it an upgrade or something? Seems odd to sell your place then buy a new one within walking distance,

It's a slight upgrade. I think it became available and they just liked it better.

Maze Craze,
This was AND STILL IS one of my favorite games. I have a 2600 (inherited from an in-law that passed) and played this game with a friend of my son a few years ago over and over. If I could find someone else who likes it, I would play it every month.

My current default-sound for my phone is the Maze Craze noise when you get out of the maze!
