The other day we're watching TV after dinner (probably Jeopardy - what a Fiasco!) and I get a text. I look, and it's from a Limousine company, perhaps it was Empire Limousine. It said that I have been assigned a new ride customer, followed by a link. I wasn't going to click on the link, and my general reaction was "hmm, weird", and then I deleted it.
Fast-forward to about 10:30 pm. We've been watching the news in bed, and I turn to go to sleep. A few minutes later, my phone rings. It's a 908 area code (New Jersey). I say "hello", and a woman says "I'm calling about my ride, this is the number I got from the limo company." I told her it's a wrong number, and I have nothing to do with this. "But this is the number they gave me. So you're not going to give me a ride? THAT'S JUST GREAT!" And then she abruptly hangs-up the phone. It never seemed odd to her that she was calling a New Hampshire area code.
No more than 10 seconds goes by, and I get another call, this time from a 201 area code (New Jersey). It was someone mumbling about my number or something (probably the limo company), and I sternly told them to lose this number, before abruptly hanging up.
If there's any moral to this, it's that when one receives an odd text, one should be prepared for unwanted phone calls to follow.
