The Musical Instrument Thread

He's played that piece 1,000 times to have that kind of muscle memory.

We tried out a couple of Eagles pieces at band practice tonight. They're fun and break up our standard blues rock fare. Our lead guitarist literally cannot play any country. He's a shredder playing the blues. I almost told him to play something in a major scale and get away from minor pentatonic. But we may end up with a cool country-blues hybrid on these Eagles songs. We'll see.

This also happened.

Neil the Drummer: Mark, I need those vice grips you gave me earlier so I can tighten my drum pedal.
Mark the One-eyed Deaf Bass Player: The what?
NTD: The vice grips for my drums.
MTO-EDBP: What?
NTD: Vice grips!
MTO-EDBP: (Blank stare)
The Guitarists, in unison: The vice grips!
MTO-EDBP: The what?
NTD: VICE GRIPS.
MTO-EDBP: (Looks confused. Guitarists look at each other, laughing. Drummer is not laughing.)
NTD: THE. VICE. GRIPS!
MTO-EDBP: Oh, you're talking about the vice grips.

I generally dislike the Eagles, too, but mostly because we've all heard their hits too. Many. Times. Glenn Fry is cheesy and Don Henley is a dick. They were really good at radio friendly California country-pop rock. And there's no denying what a great guitarist Joe Walsh is and how much he added to the band when the joined them.

The Eagles are about as country as I can get. We used to play Peaceful Easy Feeling back in the 80's, but don't think I'd be up for it now. Fry was a little cheesy, but he did a decent job keeping it rock and roll. He had the hook.

I'm not much of a country guy either. I do like southern rock, which has country and blues influences. I don't think our band would do Peaceful Easy Feeling. The drummer wants to do Lyin' Eyes and that is a stretch. At least Take it Easy is uptempo. Pretty little chord progression in the intro to that song by the way: G, followed by the four-fingered version of Am7/G, then the four-fingered version of D7sus/G. It's subtle.

I've always wanted to nail Walsh's work on 'Life in the Fast Lane', I knew the opening riff at one point, but have since forgotten it. 'Get Over It' is another one on the list. Off to youtube.

That's a fun song. Good lyrics.

Sweet! Does one manipulate a plectrum in order to agitate those metallic wires, or can the device be set to self-render standard favorites mechanically read from a scroll of paper with punched holes?

My band, the Hot Rod Roosters, recorded a demo at this killer studio way up on a mountain outside of town on Sunday. Here's a pic of the studio and two guys from the band. Old Fat Steve is holding a guitar and our 72-year old, one-eyed, nearly deaf bass player is pulling up his pants with his back to you. The studio's owner plays in another local blues band, the Bell Hornets, and all the gear and amps are his, except for our guitars and the drummer's drumsticks. :)

Leave my private life out of this.

The thing almost plays itself. It has a very comfortable neck profile. I just need to brush off the cobwebs again. I haven't played much over the last several months with work and too many other things getting in the way. We're getting the band back together in 2 weeks, so the timing is perfect.

You'll have to share a bit of the recording when you get it in the can. You should post the music too! (See what I did there? Since you're up in the hills with a 72 year old one eyed dude that can't keep his pants up, it's the perfect place for a but secs joke.)

I try not to think about but secs around those guys because the thought would drive me to insanity, like Cthulhu.

I'll post the music. Have you seen "Deliverance"?
