The Musical Instrument Thread

Okay, the incessant chord changes in American Pie are merely annoying, but not hard. However, what kills me is finding a range that I can sing in. Don is all over the place. "NOOOOOOO verdict was returned."
Don McLean never gets proper credit as a good vocalist. Listen to his version of Roy Orbison's crying. It's quite good.

I agree. He just never had that many hits. He's known mostly for one song, and the other semi-hit, "Vincent," everyone thinks is called "Starry Starry Night" and no one knows it's by Don McLean.

I've been playing some songs with F#m and Bm in them recently, unintentionally. ("Sweet Baby James" and "In My Life," specifically) And I'm hitting them. It's weird. I think playing bass has helped my guitar playing. It's taught me some additional fretting hand dexterity. Those barre chords are coming way easier than they did a couple of years ago...

Maybe I should try that. I would like to pick up bass eventually. Barre chords are easier since I had the work done on the guitar, it's just my fretting hand that's the problem.

When do you think you'll be getting the Strat?

Right now, it looks like my new whip will be here early July. There was almost a snafu where they thought they were supposed to send the wrong model, but there were too many back orders for that one, so they wanted to send the one I really wanted instead.... Not sure what the hall happened, but at least the right one is still on the way.

Laying down the first coat of paint on the Frankenstein tonight. Wish me luck.m

From the looks of it, probably not until toward the end of the year, I just have bigger fish to fry with finishing my certification and finding a permanent job after these contract positions are up.

Priorities = Un-Rock & Roll.
But
Un-Rock & Roll = Not sleeping in an old van.

I hate to say it, but the end of the year isn't that far away.

I have a possible contract that ends in august (if I get it) by that point I should be ready to take the certification test. After a permanent position comes along I'll probably treat myself to the strat and one of those line 6 amps to go with it. Probably around $1000 right there. That should be about the same time the iPhone 6 comes out (that's gonna be an expensive month).

It's easier to be a mediocre bass player than it is a mediocre guitar player. But being a good bass player--one that steers the band along with the drummer--requires a lot of knowledge of music theory, and it has to be practiced to the point of being instinctive. A very different instrument, but like Hec told me, it helped my guitar playing. And you can get a decent bass for less than a decent guitar. They're basically big heavy vibrating hunks of wood. Not much subtlety is required. ;)

That's whack.

Pictures, mother fracker. I know you have a 5D--use it!

Right now just working on perfecting some older songs I know (getting quite good at Hotel California chord changes, and making it sound reasonably more like the song on the radio) and picking up some new stuff. Also browsed Justin's site, which I haven't done in a while, and see some new songs I'd be interested in learning on the acoustic. 'You've got to hide your love away' by the Beatles is a big one since it's a huge favorite. I also see some alternate tuning lessons I'll probably pick up on later. Still enjoying the hell out of the guitar after having it almost two years now. Best Christmas Present Ever!

Stu is a badass!
I was pissed at him when I saw Satriani back in the day.
He's so amazing, I kept watching him instead of Joe.

Watching the Minor Pentatonic scale lessons on Justin's site makes me think it'll be a HELL of a lot easier to learn on the Strat when I get it than it would be on this acoustic. I love my acoustic, I can do some neat-sounding stuff with it, but the scales will have to wait until the Electric gets here.

You oughtta take $50 of your Strat fund and get that acoustic set up. No reason scales should be hard on it.

And while I'm doling out unsolicited advice, are you sure you want a Strat? They're iconic, but there are other things to consider, like the neck profile and the pickups, which are three single coils on a Strat. There are Fenders with different necks and pups that are still "Strats," as well as all kinds of other guitars with different tails and tremolos and switching options and all kinds of stuff. This is where Hectic is way more knowledgeable than I am...

I mean, Eddie Van Halen officially played a "Strat" in the 70s and 80s, but it was modified beyond recognition except for the block of wood that was the body. There are so many options...

For example, this is a Strat:

And so is this:
