My good news on this is by the time I have to deal with darkness coming home from work will be November 2022. I won't be going back to work until March this year and the days should be long enough to have daylight coming home.

Saskatoon SK at ~51 degrees latitude
Shortest day - December 21. Sunrise 9:13 am, Sunset 4:56 pm - 7 hours 43 minutes
Longest day - June 20 & 21 (tie). Sunrise 4:45 am, Sunset 9:31 pm - 16 hours, 45 minutes
(this is all standard time. With DST sunset would be 10:31pm)

My dad actually graphed the sunrises and sunsets one year based upon information he got from the weather channel. He is not very computer savy beyond youtube. He did notice that the days don't change in length much around the solstaces but do change quite a lot around the equalnoxes.

The map seems to indicate a lot of countries abolished DST at some point. I always say pick the half hour in the middle and run with it all year!

First time I went up into Canada was in April 1999. I had to cross from Portal, ND into North Portal, SK. US Customs told me to cross the border, park my truck, and wait until the Canadian customs office opened at 8am.

I said it was after 8am. They said Saskatoon doesn’t follow DST.
