Siriusly Sinatra just played Ella Fitzgerald's version of Mack The Knife. The song, originally titled Die Moritat Von Mackie Messer, was written by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht for the 1928 musical drama Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). Ella's version was included on her 1960 album Ella In Berlin, recorded live with the Paul Smith Quartet at the Deutschlandhalle. (In 1993, the nine-song album was re-released on CD with four additional songs from the show.) While singing Mack The Knife, Ella forgot the words and started improvising and scatting -- and her performance netted her a Grammy award for best female vocal. Go figure!

Another rarity on the Siriusly Sinatra channel: Van Morrison's remake of Frank Sinatra's 1966 hit That's Life. Morrison often performs the song in concert. In 1995, he and Georgie Fame (best known for Yeh Yeh and The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde) recorded an album at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London and included That's Life. There was no audience at the club. Maybe Morrison thought his fans would object to him singing old standards. The album was titled How Long Has This Been Going On. That's Life was released as a single in the UK and reached #92. Here it is:
