So as I read it the trial hinged on the fact he didn't take the runaway truck lane when he had the chance. Hmm...seems like he did fuck up but no way on purpose. Can you imagine how stressful that situation must have been? When I have hit the breaks hard enough that the anti-lock engages I nearly have a heart attack. Hitting the breaks and nothing happening sounds like a complete nightmare.
5-10 years max seems appropriate to me. This shouldn't cost him his life. I assume this was a state trial so hopefully a governor will get involved at some point.
Exactly.It was an accident. The fact they did nothing against his employer (a rich corporation) with many violations of safetly standards including many brake issues on their trucks is really all you need to know. It was a show trial and a complete miscarriage of justice. He should never have been tried (aside from insurance settlements) and if we was he should have been found not guilty. If the guy was rich, he would have walked. But instead he is a poor 23 year old. They stuck it to him.
