There are also several versions of If I Had a Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies. The studio one sounds very dry. They change a few lines in each live version.

Then there's Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. I think I've only heard a live version.

The first time through my favorites list, among the artists I left out (which I'm now covering) is Bob Seger, mainly because he was so well covered by others, but also because he kind-of belongs to Mrs. Scotch. But as they say in the old Irish Spring commercial, "Manly yes, but I like it too". Also, he's got a million hits, so I should point out my favorites.

His first success was with the 1969 song Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, off the album of the same name. (By the way, Seger is the king of apostrophes in song titles.) His next hit tune was Turn the Page, first released in 1973 on the Back in '72 album, but it didn't chart until later released as a live version. In '75 he put out the Beautiful Loser album, which went double platinum, and featured this (one of many) rock-standard dance tune

Bob Seger – Katmandu (live audio)

A year later, he put out his first live album, and the first branded as Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band; the 5x platinum Live Bullett, featuring Travelin' Man, and the live version of this one

Bob Seger – Turn the Page (live)

Later in '76, he released the first of a string of top selling albums, the 6x platinum Night Moves, with hits such as Mainstreet, Rock and Roll Never Forgets, The Fire Down Below, and of course the title track

Bob Seger – Night Moves

1978's Stranger in Town album also went 6x platinum, and it gave us Still the Same, We've Got Tonite, Till It Shines, Old Time Rock and Roll (everyone's favorite cover), and these great tunes

Bob Seger – Hollywood Nights (live audio)

I seem to like the "straining the nutsack" songs the best

Bob Seger – Feel Like a Number (live audio)

You know how I feel about Bob. My favourite albums are "Stranger In Town" and "Against the Wind". In my opinion, those albums have 100% singles and no filler. I like all his stuff up to his only #1 "Shakedown" but to a lesser extent after "The Distance".

The first time through my chronological list, that awful Queen movie had just come out, when I was covering the 70's. We were all going through Queen overload. But since they're a favorite of mine, I need to mention them. Also, they just have too many hit songs to cover in detail, so I'll just list most, and only feature some of my top picks.

Their first hit is one of my favorites. In fact, this is the only song from their 1973 debut album worth mentioning

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive (live)

We got Killer Queen in '74, and these in '75

(This might seem like an unexpected pick, but it's just a nice song)

Queen - You’re My Best Friend (live?)

Oh GOD, not THIS one. But the (mostly) live performance really makes it worth watching

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (live)

'76 brought us Somebody to Love, and this riff-heavy rocker

Queen - Tie Your Mother Down (live)

We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions (favorites, but played to death) came out in '77, along with Get Down, Make Love. 1978 brought us Don't Stop Me Now, Bicycle Race, and this stomper

Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls (live)

In 1980 they put out Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Another One Bites the Dust. The Bowie duet Under Pressure came out in '82. Radio Ga Ga was released in '84, and I Want It All was way out in '89. Mercury never performed it live.

Can't remember if I've already posted this, but Freddie is IMO the greatest rock singer of all time.

Surprisingly, I've heard every song you posted. So no "first time hearing" post from me!

And here's a great cover of "Get Down Make Love". It's filthy.... and I love it.

That really has that NIN sound.

I would agree that young Freddie has it all: range, pitch, power, and charisma. His singing is effortless. Definitely one of the top front men.

I forgot if I had covered AC/DC, and it turns out I did mention them; I listed all my favorite songs, but I only posted the Back in Black video. You can see that on page 20 or so of this thread.

Thinking of them got me to recall a story. Back in my audiophile days, there was a place on Mass Ave in Arlington that was like a 2nd home to me. It was one of those independent, high-end audio stores. I occasionally went there and parted with some serious money, but mostly, I just hung out and listened to music, and tried out the new equipment. One day, they had a big to-do when they got the new Thiel CS 5 speakers, which look like this

Yes, they're about 7 feet tall, and cost as much as an entry-level luxury car. Anyway, They had a big shindig, with company reps, and appetizers, and they played all sorts of "demonstration" music, which is audiophile crap. Classical, light jazz, acoustic stuff.

But when the crowd left, and it was just the salesmen and store owners, they put this on, and cranked it up. And it was glorious

That looks like it would have been fun to test out those speakers.
AC/DC is legend.
Agreed.
I had Back In Black on vinyl back in the 80s. But nowadays I stay away from those songs because if you've tuned into any rock station for an afternoon in the last 20 years, they play every song on it. Daily.
Also agreed.

FM has ruined a lot of good bands for me, but last weekend TNT came on the radio while I was brushing my teeth, and it sounded great.
I do like it when a song can overcome the Clearchannel effect.

Let's transition from AC/DC to Devo, shall we? As the 70's punk rock movement was breaking into different factions, we got everything from The Clash to Elvis Costello. And Devo. They wanted to be different, and they successfully achieved the WTF factor they desired, while transitioning punk into electronica. This became a cult hit in '77 (from their 1978 debut album)

Devo - Mongoloid

This novel cover got widespread radio airplay, and got them onto late night TV

Devo - I Can’t Get No Satisfaction (live on SNL)

In 1980 they came out with a new album, and several hit songs, including Whip It (which has been played to death), and these

Devo - Girl U Want (live on Fridays)

Devo - Freedom of Choice

A year later, a movie soundtrack produced this hit cover song

Devo - Working in the Coal Mine

I think they're one of those bands who just keep touring.

I've tried to get into their 70s/80s music beyond "Whip It" several times but just can't seem to appreciate it. Someone at work thinks I'm nuts for not getting into more of their stuff.

I can do "Freedom" and "Theme To Dr Detroit" once in a while. And I discovered "Post Post Modern Man" within the last 10 years and that's pretty good. But their classics (aside from "Whip") still don't grab me.

I do, however, like "Fresh" from 2010.

And Gerarld Casale's new solo song "I'm Gonna Pay You Back" is good too.

That's a great idea Scotch! Let's do that.
Devo - I Can’t Get No Satisfaction (live on SNL)
I think this is one of the better covers that's been done.
Devo - Working in the Coal Mine
I like this cover too.

You're nuts! :D

I love me some Devo. Ohio boys, they are.

Everybody likes The Fixx, right? Despite having a few hits that sound somewhat similar, they're a staple of the early 80s. Their popular years started in '82, with these two hits

The Fixx - Stand or Fall (live)

The Fixx - Red Skies

In '83, they scored with Saved by Zero, and this funky, upbeat tune

The Fixx - One Thing Leads to Another

Then in '84, they had a hit with this one (note the use of the cool mobile phone)

The Fixx - Are We Ourselves

Their last hit song that I'm aware of is Secret Separation, from 1986. According to Wiki, Driven Out topped the rock charts in '89, but it doesn't ring a bell.
