That whole first Marc Cohn album is fantastic (ignore the rest of his catalog IMO). But it's pretty mellow, don't operate heavy machinery while listening.

One of their two overplayed songs, but it's still fantastic. I especially like that it's an honest love song. No poetic exaggeration. No "loving you forever only one for me God's plan I'll never ever ever ever leave you even if you try to kill me in my sleep you're the one blah blah b.s.". It's simple, raw and honest. "You make me feel like this, and that, and this, and whatever happens in our uncertain future (I could leave, I say the meanest stuff you've ever heard), I'll still have these feelings for you."

There's a lot of debate about what this song really means. I've always taken it as "I want to get you drunk so I can use you" (similar to "The Package", except that one doesn't specify alcohol). But no matter what the lyrics are about, it's eerie, it rocks, and it's one of a handful of songs that would be the genesis of "the 90s rock sound".

#100 Depeche Mode "Dangerous"
The non-LP b-side of "Personal Jesus". This might be the best CD5 I've ever owned. It came out before several months before Violator. There's actually only two Violator-era songs I'd put above this one . I like it even better than most of the (amazing) songs that are on the album. BTW the other non-LPs "Sea Of Sin" and "Happiest Girl" are really good too!

I think I may have told this story somewhere on here? But Pretty Hate Machine changed my world in 1990. So when Broken came out in '92, I bought it immediately, ran home and put it in my CD player and put my headphones on. The first track starts super-quiet and builds, so by the time track two ("Wish") came on, my volume was up real high. From the first "This is the first day of my last days" with that crushing guitar exploding right after, I was paralyzed. Throughout those six songs, I couldn't move. It was terrifying...........ly awesome!!! At the end of track 6, I sighed with relief... but then the CD player read 7 .... 8 .... 9 .... 10 ..... 11 ... I went from freaked out to COMPLETELY freaked the fuck out -- as it climbed higher .... 15 ...16 ... just silence! ... 62 .... 63 ... it felt like my CD player was possessed! 96 ... 97 .... 98-then it started making noises again. Two more songs not listed on the package as tracks 98 and 99. When the last track finished, I sat on the edge of my bed in shock for an additional five or ten minutes, reeling from the experience (no exaggeration). Best first time album listening experience ever, never to be topped.
