#290 Manu Chao & Anouk "Bongo Bong / Je Ne T'Aime Plus"

Another CMJ gem - but a really bizarre one. I'd never expect this to find mass appeal. Actually, I would guess 99% of the world doesn't care for it at all. In fact, the first time I heard it, I was like "WTF is this?!". But over time, I found myself wanting to hear it again. And again. And again. Years later, after a few listens, my wife also went from WTH?! to loving it too.

#289 Romantics "Talking In Your Sleep"

I can't say I want this on my list of all-time favorite songs. I'm not proud of it. But it'd be deceitful if I left it off. Killer bass line. And I sing along with it every time it comes on. #1983

Took me a while to realize this was the same band behind "What I Like About You", another favorite of mine.

I like it! It's a quirky ear-worm.
It reminds me of my 2nd favorite Christmas song.

A stupidly simple song. But it's a perfect example of how to respect a great hook and not over-complicate it.

@scotchandcigar I feel the same about the Romantics, except for some reason I also kinda like "One In A Million". Just not near as much as the other two.

@Jon I know what you mean. The drummer sings "What I Like" and a guitarist sings "Sleep". And musically they sound pretty different as well.

@IdRatherBeSkiing True! And then there's also how to define a one-hit wonder, which either gets to technical (like a group with a #1 song, then a forgotten #39 hit which really should be considered a one-hit wonder) or too subjective (like VH1 calling Vanilla Ice a one-hit wonder when he had two top five hits, but is the other one reaaaaally still in the public's consciousness.....??).

Well get this; I just looked it up, and while Talking... hit #3, What I Like only reached #49, which blows my mind (I thought it'd be the other way around). So they are a one-hit wonder.

To me, a band needs to have a top-10 hit, and nothing else in the top-40. That's my general consensus, but I'm sure I could find exceptions.

@scotchandcigar I thought the same thing, and was just as shocked about "What I Like". But later I discovered that "One In A Million" was a top 40 hit, so that makes them (technically) a two-hit wonder (#3 and #37). Just like I was saying above about that 'forgotten #39 hit' - an exact case of this, but with another twist of a not-forgotten #49 hit.

"What I Like" is on my list of "songs I can't believe didn't make the top 40" along with Modern English "I Melt With You" and Missing Persons "Words".

That is how I would view it.

I can think of 2 songs that are commonly played as one hit wonders that break this rule.
Rupert Holmes - Escape (Pina Colada Song) was a #1 hit for him and always played as a one hit wonder. But he had 2 other top 40: Him and Answering Machine. I remember the 3rd because I listened to a Kasey K top 40 with it on it and listened to Kasey give a 3 minute explanation to the listeners what an answering machine was. Hilarious.
The Knack - My Sharona was a #1 hit. Good Girls Don't was a top 20 followup.

Even the quintisential one hit wonder Dexy's Midnight Runners with only 1 charting hit (@ #1) is not a one hit in Britain. They had a second #1 hit (in 1980).

I've always considered The Knack as a two-hit band, because I remember both songs being big. But to me, DMR is a OHW.

#287 2 Live Crew "Me So Horny"

While the PMRC were busy clinking wine glasses over caviar for their victory over songs like Mary Jane Girls "In My House" and Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It" (which were obviously permanently warping the minds of children), 2 Live dropped an album loaded with more pornography than Jenna Jameson's filmography. I heard this album for months blaring out of college dorms, parties, cars at stop lights - it was (almost) everywhere. Go, Tipper! BTW I actually prefer the 'clean' version of this track over the explicit album version.

#286 Rollins Band "Liar"

"The guy who ran Imago Records said, 'That’s a single!' And we said, 'We’re not going to record that!' And he said, 'Oh, you’re recording it.'"

What started out as an ad-libbed, improv joke-song played during band warm-ups and soundchecks became their best, and best-known, song. Once in a blue moon, record executives actually do get it right.

I love that tune.
