I will never NOT like this song. It is a bit of a departure for the band, but welcome to the 80's!
The actual video is pretty 'interesting' as well!
The 'mistake' here was releasing it immediately after 'Graceland' and having everyone expect Graceland 2. It held up nicely on it's own, and yeah it didn't get the credit it deserved.
You may already know this, but just in case you don't, there are several versions of this video. I remember seeing most (or all?) of them back in the day. There are the same video footage, just manipulated differently each time.

Eighteen different variations of the video were made (the first one, for instance, simply had the band upside-down, but motionless for the whole song), with the eleventh one chosen as the "standard" version, and has remained the "official" video. A half-hour documentary on the making of the video was broadcast on MTV in 1984. Also, a marathon showing all eighteen videos one after the other was also shown on MTV.

I’ve gotten a lot of letters from full-on Christians who want me to burn in hell. I’ve gotten about 20 from people in the Midwest and the South who said they actually took the record back."
Songwriter Andy Preiboy: "We’ve gotten letters from religious people who are very disturbed by the song. It’s not an anti-Christian song in the least. It’s just an accurate depiction of someone who’s dying without hope, without faith, without family and without friends ... I had two very religious grandfathers who died horribly from cancer, and I watched them go through a long period of rage and anger and atheism, railing at the God they’d worshiped all their life. Sooner or later, they accepted it. Wendy never accepted it."

The Cure were an acquired taste for me. I started at 1989's Disintegration and worked backward. I found a whole lot of songs I didn't like, but cherry picked the ones I did. Over time, more and more songs began to click - like this one, which I would personally call a pop-punk classic.
Here's an opportunity to list some pop-punk gems that didn't make the 333, but are great fun! Vapors "Turning Japanese", Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated", Goldfinger "Here In Your Bedroom", Blink 182 "Dammit", Less Than Jake "Automatic", Jimmy Eat World "The Middle", Rancid "Ruby Soho", American Hi-Fi "Flavor Of The Weak", ALL "Million Bucks" and SR-71 "Right Now".

Same here. It took a while for them to sink in. Mixed Up was the turning point for me. Some of their more melancholy stuff still doesn't resonate though.
Mixed Up helped me too, while I was still ingesting Disintegration. For example, I got into the new mixes of "Inbetween Days" and "The Walk" before I got into the original. Over time, I started to like the originals better than the new mixes -- so they served as a good transition tool for me!

I think my interest in the Cure peaked up the first time I heard 'Pictures of You' on the way to work one day (well before XM). Never really lost interest in them since.

Not only is the recording on the Rumours album magnificent, but I've had the KCRW Live On Air version since the 90s and that recording rivals the original. In fact, that recording is probably a big part of why this song ended up on the 333. I can't find the KCRW recording on YouTube unfortunately, so here's the classic album version.

I like it for the same reason. Here is a different story of a bar from a different perspective -- a patron which I also like.

I always thought Sheryl's first single was "Leaving Las Vegas", but that's probably because it's the first song I heard from her. It reminds me that I used to not only have monthly CD subscription (CMJ New Music Monthly) but also a monthly music video VHS tape subscription, and that's how I discovered Sheryl.
