For metalheads, there's gotta be dozens. And what people called metal in the 70s and 80s are no longer metal to metalheads.

Thrash, sludge, prog, metalcore, power, viking, death, grindcore, numetal, industrial, groove, goth, folk, doom, black, avant-garde, alt-metal, funk, rap, speed, glam, NDH (german)...

Here are the 25 top metal subgenres on Spotify back in 2015:

CrazyTown1.jpg

Crazy Town

Genre: rap rock, rap metal

Discovered: Downloaded "Toxic" from Napster or some other file-sharing software (don't tell Lars) to see what they sounded like before seeing them at Ozzfest 2000. They got kicked off the tour a few weeks before it came to Massachusetts, so I didn't end up seeing them.

Other: Like Sugar Ray, these guys were originally rap rock then had a crossover pop hit (SR = "Fly" / CT = "Butterfly"). But I was already listening to their rap rock music before they crossed over. Good for them both, I guess, but their next albums were a lot different (and lamer IMO) after getting their big taste of success.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Only When I'm Drunk
2. The Life I Chose
3. Butterfly
4. B-Boy 2000
5. Toxic

News from 2000

If you had hoped to catch Crazy Town on this summer's Ozzfest, you'd better set your sights on one of the other 18 bands playing this summer's version of the tour. Spokespeople for Ozzfest confirm that the Los Angeles hard rockers have been pulled from Ozzfest 2000 by the band's manager. According to the Ozzfest camp, this decision follows Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock's recent arrest and his subsequent absence from two Ozzfest dates.

News from 2001

"I was breaking up with my girlfriend and we'd been on the road for like some ridiculous amount of time and there was all this tension," said vocalist Shifty Shellshock. "And then there was all this drug abuse and alcohol abuse. Everything just caved in real quick."
