Marilyn Manson

Genre: heavy rock, industrial rock, alt rock

Discovered: MTV "Lunchbox"

Other: I've liked random songs from throughout his career. Most albums have some songs I like and some I don't care for. He's had stuff I like as recent as last year's "Don't Chase The Dead". Before that was 2012 "No Reflection".

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Beautiful People
2. Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This
3. Cryptorchid
4. The Fight Song
5. The Reflecting God

I like some of his stuff.

Back in the day, when he was still playing really small clubs, the Mrs. used to hang out with a group of friends. One of them used to write music articles for a local paper. They went to this little club in a basement in the hood that held about 100 people, and it was less than half full. He had to take a picture for his article, so they went up through the pit to the front of the stage. Marilyn threw something out into the crowd and the Mrs. reached out to grab it. It turned out to be a chicken foot. Needless to say, she didn't keep the souvenir.

Mary Chapin Carpenter

Genre: country crossover, singer-songwriter

Discovered: FM "Passionate Kisses"

Other: Pretty sure this will be the only country artist on my High Fives list. Come On Come On is the only country CD I own. The only other song I have from her in my MP3 collection is her cover of "Grow Old With Me", which was one of my wedding reception songs. Trivia: I didn't learn until years later that "Passionate Kisses" was a cover.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Passionate Kisses
2. He Thinks He'll Keep Her
3. I Take My Chances
4. Come On Come On
5. Only A Dream

HIGH FIVE:

1. Show Yourself
2. Curl Of The Burl
3. The Motherload
4. High Road
5. Blue Walsh

I'm kinda surprised you don't listen to more from her, most of her stuff is very similar.

I've taken a liking to this one....which I featured in my top artist list.

Matthew Sweet

Genre: pop rock, rock and roll

Discovered: CMJ (same disc that introduced me to ALL and Senser), "Sick Of Myself"

Other: I probably heard his 1993 song "Superdeformed" - track 1 on No Alternative (with Nirvana "Sappy (aka Verse Chorus Verse)" and the Beastie Boys killer track "It's The New Style (Live)". But it was 1995 "Sick Of Myself" that actually got me into him.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Sick of Myself
2. I've Been Waiting
3. Where You Get Love
4. Girlfriend
5. Time Capsule

Only song of his I have is "This Moment" which is from the benefit CD "Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams".

My first time hearing that one. Feels pretty different from the five above, which are more upbeat. But I still like his distinctive voice in it.

The only song I knew from Sweet Relief is Pearl Jam's "Crazy Mary" which FM played to death, probably because the mainstream liked hearing the line "Take a bottle, drink it down, drink it down, pass it around" over and over. Not being a drinker, it wore on me pretty quick!

My favourite line in that one is
"With a sign tacked to the side
Said 'No L-O-I-T-E-A-R-R-I-N-G Allowed'
Underneath that sign
Always congregated quite a crowd"
