This video just came out about the AM radio stations that had 50000 watts of power and could be heard late at night through various parts of North America around the 1970's. My favorites were WLW in Cincinnati (I would listen to a DJ named Jim O'Bara) and WABC-New York (with Cousin Greasy (Brucie)} Dan Ingram and Harry Harrison.

WCFL and WLS in Chicago were also listed but I was able to hear day or night. Not listed: I heard WNBC-New York (Wolfman Jack Roller Derby Report) and WBBM (CBS Mystery Theater). The video is long- almost 30 minutes. Good memories

 
In Regina, SK, I got CFUN in Vancouver as well as some Chicago stations. It was fun just to sit by the receiver and turn that dial and see what you could pick up. But I was a teenager in Regina, SK and despite the saying "A city that rhymes with fun" being theret wasn't that exciting.
 
Ever since I was a kid and got my first radio, I have loved listening late at night or early in the morning to see what faraway stations I could hear. On many nights I've been able to get 1170 WWVA, a 50,000-watt station in Wheeling, West Virginia – 2,092 miles away from Glendale! WWVA switched from country to news/talk in 1997. KCBQ in San Diego is also a 50,000-watt station at 1170 but at nighttime KCBQ reduces power to 2900 watts so, if atmospheric conditions are favorable, I can hear WWVA.
 
I used to love to play "AM roulette" in the car. The best I ever did was driving home from work one night - I worked up north near Kansas City's airport, & I picked up a station in Toronto.
