Mrs. Scotch and I were happy to have been invited to our neighbors' (the doctors) daughter's wedding, which took place this past weekend. It was an all-weekend affair; with a welcome dinner on Friday, the wedding on Saturday, and brunch at the daughter's restaurant on Sunday.
But for those of you who are not on the east coast, we had a Nor'easter come up this week, and it was set to hit us late Friday, and go through the weekend. It looked like this
All the wedding festivities were in mid-coast Maine (green circle), about 2 hours north of me (red star).
Being even further east of us, everyone expected it to be hit pretty hard, and all the events planned for the weekend were outdoors. But our neighbors, who were throwing the shindig, were certainly capable of dealing with whatever came.
And as we arrived up there on Friday, it seemed like the storm stalled somewhat. The Friday evening event was great, and the weather was beautiful. The groom is an oyster farmer, so aside from the never-ending smorgasbord of appetizers, small dishes, and drinks, his company provided the oyster shuck station, which also included cherrystone clams and jumbo shrimp. They even had some giant (6 year old) oysters.
On Saturday afternoon, the rain was still holding off for the ceremony. It all took place on this big retreat along one of the many waterways in the region. First, we were led through a path in the woods to a pre-ceremony bar. Along the path, there was a guy playing piano
Amazingly, they had the balls to go ahead and have it all set-up outside.
The couple arrived by boat, with the groom paddling. At the end of the ceremony, the groom stomped on the glass, the crowd cheered, and the opening guitar riff of Ozzy Osborne's "Crazy Train" blasted from the sound system as the couple began the procession out. Nice touch.
This was one of the "tents" for the reception
It did start raining later in the evening, and there were some wind gusts. But it was nothing like what we all expected. Even the Sunday brunch was dry and close to 70 degrees. We heard that the storm got blocked by a high-pressure system before reaching that part of Maine.
Back at home, our power went out for most of Saturday afternoon. Our daughter was at the house watching the pets. And we came home to quite a stormy mess, which has continued through today.
