Seeing two people say they like "Sex And Candy" and "Bittersweet Symphony" in the 90s countdown thread today reminds me they are lobster songs of mine. Lots of people like them but I can't stand either one.
The first one quickly went from interesting to dumb for me. The second one I like, but I can see how the style and repetitiveness would be a turn-off.

Nostalgia tracks for me.
There were a lot of good things going on when those songs were out.
Bittersweet IS monotonous as hell though.

Bittersweet Symphony is one of those that the band, and the solo artist Richard Ashcroft (I believe that's his name) has WAY better songs.

Same thing with John Cougar Mellencamp, 'Scarecrow' is a classic, but yet radio keeps beating 'Jack and Diane' into the ground. Rain on the Scarecrow, Lonely Ol' Night, Paper and Fire, Authority Song, those could be getting a lot more play and I'd be happy. But NOOOO!

Mrs Scotch is Mellencamp's #1 fan, so I know he's got a lot of good stuff.

I like "Bittersweet Symphony". It has a very pleasing melody.

My wife hated Mellencamp. If we were listening in the car and he came on I had to change the channel. I got reciprocal rights for Paula Abdul so it worked out. My top 5 Mellencamp songs:

1. Pink Houses
2. Hurts So Good
3. Rave On
4. Jack & DIanne (although this is way over played)
5. Small Town

My favorite of his is “Cherry Bomb”. It’s just a fun listen. “Small Town” is an instant channel changer for me due to overplayed and repetitive. I used to be sick of Jack and Diane but then I sort of started loving it again.

Like I said, Mellencamp is Mrs. Scotch's #1 artist. She's seen him more than 30 times. So, not only do we have all of his music, we know all the songs. And I'd be willing to bet that if you played some of these on my list, you'd recognize them.

I Need a Lover - OK, this is his first big hit. Not on anyone's list? I love the long intro version.
Pink Houses
Authority Song
Paper in Fire
Crumblin' Down
R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.
Jack & Diane
Wild Night (with Meshell Ndegeocello) - Big radio hit, also not on anyone's list.
Cherry Bomb
Rain on the Scarecrow
Peaceful World
Your Life is Now
Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) - You've definitely heard this
I'm Not Running Anymore
Check it Out - You've definitely heard this
Rumbleseat
Just Another Day
Hurts So Good
Lonely Ol' Night - You've definitely heard this
Ain't Even Done With the Night
Small Town

Get a Leg Up
Only one mention of one song from my fav album of his

whenever_we_wanted_1629484153.jpg

This project followed an era of music dominated by darker themes focusing on a heartland in peril, presented amid bucolic musical accompaniment from violins, dulcimers and accordions. Not everyone had followed him down this more serious path, however, as Mellencamp learned during a happenstance meeting with a fan on a South Carolina beach.

"He said, 'I loved your last two records, but there wasn't one thing about sex on either one of them,'" Mellencamp recalled in David Masciotra's Mellencamp: American Troubadour. "I realized he was right, and I didn't really like that."

"I felt like everybody, maybe even me, was taking me a little too seriously," he told the Detroit Free Press in 1991.

Bitter Sweet Symphony samples the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra's 1966 instrumental version of the Rolling Stones' 1965 hit The Last Time. In 1997, Rolling Stones manager and ABKCO Publishing CEO Allen Klein insisted that Oldham, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards be given sole credit as songwriters. Klein died in 2009. His son Jody has been CEO of ABKCO since 2006. In 2019, Jody, Mick, Keith and Rolling Stones manager Joyce Smyth agreed to a deal giving Verve lead singer Richard Ashcroft credit for "lyrics" and giving Jagger and Richards credit for "original lyrics." Jagger and Richards also assigned their publishing rights to Ashcroft.

Here is the Oldham Orchestra's instrumental from The Rolling Stones Songbook album, relased June 3 1966:

Not a "most hated" song, but definitely a lobster song for me, is "Come Together". I've never liked the original, and have never heard a cover I like either. The music is interesting but I can't take the lyrics.

He wear no shoeshine?
He got toe-jam football?
He say, "I know you, you know me"?
He got walrus gumboot?

And the two worst lines:

He got feet down below his knee?
He say, "One and one and one is three"

sadchild, it will likely surprise you – and maybe disgust you – that Come Together has been recorded by more than 600 artists including Michael Jackson, Buddy Miles, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, James Last, Count Basie, Charlie Byrd, Diana Ross, Ben E. King, George Duke, Syl Johnson, Nick Ingman, Dwight Twilley, Delbert McClinton, Meat Loaf, Ike & Tina Turner, Aerosmith, Godsmack, Soundgarden, the Supremes, the Beat Bugs, the Chairmen Of The Board and the Mike Curb Congregation. And look who sang the song at the October 2016 six-day Desert Trip music festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California:

It's a stoner song, done in a tongue-in-cheek way. It's supposed to be funny. It seems harmless to me. And of course the lyrics have become iconic.

Writers/actors/filmmakers/podcasters Natalie and Tara have their own YouTube channel. Here is their hilarious video for Random Words, a parody of Come Together: "Nothin' 'bout this song makes any sense to me. Random words strung together. Broccoli."
