He needs to reduce the price or increase the value of his stock or find some cash to make the deal work.
Yes. But it sounds ridiculous.

Elon net worth: $218 billion
Twitter offer: $44 billion

Let's say he buys it at $44 billion, it tanks and he sells it for $4 billion.

218 - 44 + 4 = 178 billion. Somehow, some way, he'll figure out how to make ends meet.

In fact, dude could pay 4x that price, then sell it for a nickel, and still have 42 billion dollars left to "scrape by somehow" with.

You think he is risking any of his own money in this deal? How do you think he got $218 billion?

He doesn't have $218B laying around. That's the value, on paper, of all his assets. He doesn't have enough cash to pay the $44B, that's why he's going through investors.

Sure, but bottom line he could quit right now, cash out all of his assets and be able to spend $12 million EVERY DAY FOR 50 YEARS and not run out of money. He doesn't need to nickel and dime, or even "thousand-dollar" and "million-dollar" like a single mother clipping coupons for a good deal on gruel. He's just stroking his business ego at this point. He doesn't have to haggle unless it's to brag and satisfy some arbitrary definition of a 'good business deal' he invented in his head. His life won't change whether he pays $44 billion or $41 billion.

It's sport for guys like that.

Hell, I was proud of myself for talking the appliance store down $450 when I bought my oven and cooktop several years ago.

Very political so I'll be brief but as I see it losing rights is never a good thing. I'm talking guns and abortion.

Is it a right to get something (anything) without any regulations or restrictions? Can a 10 year old get in a car with no testing and drive any speed they choose on I95 for example?

Exactly. And for the sake of argument, let's stick to constitutional (US) rights, such as voting. You have to be 18 to vote. You also have to meet a bunch of other quite silly and trivial stipulations; such as having a single verified address on-file in the town in which you are registered, have certain specific ID cards (that the town or state may have changed the rules for), be pre-registered by a certain date, go to an ever-vanishing list of polling places and stand in-line perhaps all day - all on a weekday while missing work, etc.

What if you tried just walking up to a polling place and said "I have a constitutional right to vote, and I'm going to vote now"?

As a side note, and perhaps this should be in "How My State Works", in Canada, I can do just that. I just have to show proper id showing my address and photo. I may be asked to produce proof of citizenship (birth certificate, citizenship card, or passport). I don't register for any political party. I can become a member of any or all of them if I choose but not required. If I was a member, I would participate in their conventions to pick their leaders whenever they are held (not every 4 years like you guys). The membership would also cost $$$$.

I don't know how we ended up with the situation we have in the US. Nothing about political parties is in the constitution, yet the rules set by the parties are what control elections. As a long-time resident of the "1st in the nation" primary state, I know all too well that the stupid rules they come up with have zero to do with any US laws. It's really just a group of partisan people trying to control the game.

I'm all for red flag laws and raising the age to 21 but with an exception for active duty military. If you can risk your life for our nation at 18 you should have full adult rights.

Age to buy tobacco is 21 nationwide. 17 to get a driver's license in most states, and 25 to rent a car.
Didn't realize tobacco went up.

I should said "license to drive". Most states let 16 year olds drive on their own with a 'restricted license'. My son was driving on his own right after his 16th bday.

From Hertz.com:

Renters must be at least 20 years old to rent a vehicle at most locations in the U.S. and Canada. In Michigan, New York and the province of Quebec, the minimum age to rent a vehicle is 18. In Alabama and Nebraska, the minimum age to rent a vehicle is 19 ... Renters under 25 can rent from a wide range of car classes, from economy to SUVs. Young renters are excluded from renting certain specialty vehicles and from renting from the Dream Car® collection, Prestige collection, and the Adrenaline Collection.

New Hampshire (not surprisingly) does permits at 15.5, and license at 16. But most states are 17.

My understanding was that 25 was the age that one's insurance would cover you renting a car. One time, when my younger daughter was like 23, she got a rental when her car was being repaired, and we had to drive it, while she drove our car.
