Major Piece on Sirius (with Howard) in Sunday NY Times

When I said I would like Howard to save regular radio, I was saying he could do that after he leaves Sirius XM or the company goes down in flames-whichever comes first. I agree with jgatie that a simulcast-type show would be a total disaster.

In truth, I wouldn't be surprised to see Howard go back to FM. He certainly has enough impetus to prove the "radio has changed since he left" folks wrong, and there is no doubt in my mind that he would recapture his old audience and then some. IMHO, the "changes" people speak of were there well before 1/9/06 and the only real change since is Howard isn't there any more.

True, but didn't Andy need a Warden Norton to remind him what freedom is? If there is one more thing Howard may wish to accomplish, it is coming out of his "seclusion" on Sat radio and reconquering every two-bit imitator who lay claim to his kingdom just as soon as the king wasn't around any more.

It's probably true that a simulcast would be a dismal failure but consider this. O and A was basically an FM show that was broadcast on satellite, right? I assume it had the same commercial cut outs on AM and FM. If Howard were not simulcast but broadcast on FM 1 to 2 hours later, it could have all the commercial time desired (although going about 15 minutes would destroy it) and could be more smoothly censored. Thus, Howard would not have the flow destroyed by commercials or censorship. He would not even have to know what was left of the show by the time it got to FM. It would be not optimal Howard on FM... in fact it would be very inferior but it would still be better than almost anything else on FM. What a job it would be for the censors.

There is no way FM would go for a delayed program. 6-10 drive time is the most important time of the day, whole stations are built on morning ratings. O&A tried for this type of delay (they even had a trial run a couple of days) and when push came to shove, they caved to the 6-9 hours because CBS was having none of it.

Sure a delayed show would be good for us on satellite . . . which is exactly why FM would never go for it, no matter how desperate they are. Despite what anyone says about it dying, FM still has a lot of clout, and if anyone thinks they are going to put up grade A money for a grade C product, they only have to look at the utter failure of O&A on FM to see what the result of that is. Censored Howard may be better than anything else on FM, but for the price he'd command, FM would have a right to their say over the timeslot and content that he airs . . . and you can best believe they would exercise that right.

With a one hour delay, they would get full drive time in every time zone but the East. Doesn't Imus start at 7?

He wouldn't have to... He would carry on about any subject using any words he desired. He could disclaim reponsibility for the quality of the FM program and, in fact, condemn it. The FM stations would take the risk of a fine. Of course, if he spent 30 minutes on some bit involving something such as Richard breakfasting on human shit, it would take a big chunk out of the FM program. OK... I've exausted the possbilities.

I just realized that the Times is one of the show's (only legitimate) advertisers. I wonder how that will play into the response? I'm guessing Mel tells Howard to keep it to a minimum (although why anyone would be listening to Mel at this point is beyond me).

Hey Now

Howard said he would never go back to boring, government controlled, censored, old-fashioned, terrestrial radio.

I have a good idea, lets make a list of things Howard said he would never do, Iwill start it.

He also said he would never get married again. :bs:

Bubba's show is completely different. He does 2 different shows, one of which is in limited FM markets. The proposed Howard FM/Sat venture would be a simulcast and the FM side would more than likely not be in limited markets. Given Howard's name and the desperation of FM, I would guess he'd be given at least as many markets as he performed well in before.

Edit: See the thing about Bubba vs. O&A, Bubba didn't forsake his sat listeners in order to cash in on FM. No matter how careful you are, the FM side is going to want to censor content and add commercials. This is what was predicted would happen to O&A, and it is exactly what happened. FM sensitivity overtook all decisions, and the non-Kool-aid drinking XM fans realized they were getting screwed.

I said before that if Howard ever went to a simulcast FM/Sat show, I'd cancel because those paying for the Sat side would be getting the shaft. I feel that way even more strongly after seeing O&A fans get the shaft on XM.

It looks as if Bubba has "forsaken his sat listeners" for the non default-boring old fashioned radio cash dollars.

Will the Sirius/XM/Bubba fan realize they're being screwed?

Unless of course, this is just some big hoax....misunderstanding...contract stipulation...Sabien brainfart....

Ouch. How does that guy know so much about a show he hates so much? He even knows what their fans were thinking, and the inner workings and motivations of the show. Can he learn all that from "articles" he's read about the show? Is there some quarterly mag published about O&A or something? Me thinks he's the O&A version of our HTD.

Nice dodge by Howard on the NYT article today. Clearly, their ad dollars are worth more to him than a good, old-fashioned war (or Mel told him to keep quiet).

As I said in the other thread, the Bubba satrad fans are getting screwed. If I were a Bubba fan, I'd be super pissed. Just like O&A, Bubba fucked his fans for $$$.

I hear what you're saying there and I'll have to see how the new Bubba show goes, but last year, other than the language, he seemed to have more freedoms on the FM show than on Sirius. Sirius execs are all up his butt. They even had a delay put on his show. The Sirius guys won't let him mention the "other situation", he's subject to a $250K fine. When their lines were cut recently, the FM show was going to let him use their equipment to broadcast his show to Sirius, but he declined, because just explaining the nice thing they did could have cost him a quarter million.

Taking Howard back would be admitting they are idiots that screwed things up without him. They'd have to swallow too much pride. Plus, they still wouldn't give him freedom to do his show and would want to "fix" things...
