IdRatherBeSkiing's Top 20 (Sunday, June 21st, 2020 version)

Maybe, maybe not. For one, I suspect some of the songs that some members loathe would make other members' heads explode. Secondly, I dislike/ loathe many of the top-ranked songs that other members posted, but I don't see the point in going on and on about how their song sucks. In fact, some of the combinations of songs that other members list as favorites blows my mind. But I don't bring it up, because I know how it feels to be told that (for example) Chris Cornell is unlistenable, or that it's a mistake to think that Audioslave was any good.

I see your point there.

I personally don't take offense if someone tells me one of my favourite songs sucks or they dislike it. In the same vein, I have also commented if a song posted by somebody else is on my dislike list. I don't mean to be hurtful by posting that but just sharing my opinion (which is just that). It is just information which highlights our taste differences.

As to combinations blowing ones mind, when songs are ordered by position, or alphabetically, or year, sometimes the distinctions between them stand out more in comparison to your sampler where songs are more grouped together by artist. I personally find the differences to be fascinating when I notice them. And I am well aware of the multiple genres I have represented in my 424 & my **** list.

On your first point, it doesn't affect my opinion of an artist or song, if someone thinks it sucks. I also don't mind hearing what other people think, because it's interesting. But here's my issue: if someone posts a bunch of songs they love, and I think most of them are sappy, cheesy, juvenile, horrible, or just not to my liking, I'm not sure what to do. My instinct is to keep my opinion to myself, but then other people share theirs.

Conversely if everyone likes "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil except for me (true story)... maybe that's an indictment of my tastes and not an indictment of the song.
Let's take that as an example; I love Midnight Oil, but I got sick of that song about a month after it came out. In general, I don't like pop songs, or songs that appeal to a pop audience. So I'd be shitting on 75% of everyone's choices. And I don't think we need that.

As for your 2nd point, I wasn't referring to your lists. I was referring to someone who lists an Indigo Girls song right after a death-metal song.

Yes, but that person has them listed next to each other because its a numbered list. So the contrast is more pronounced. If it was ordered by group he would have done a post about Indigo Girls and moved on to death metal the next day creating separation. But if they are number #233 and #232 in an ordered list the separation is very pronounced.

I never said it affected my opinion. It was just interesting.

I see your point, And in the end it is a judgement call. No right or wrong. It does highlight how we each listen and enjoy music differently.

Who the HELL would do something like THAT? I mean, have some scruples, right?? Wait, why are my ears ringing?

As for opinions, opinions are like... wait, no. Start over. As for opinions, I can take a good bashing (serious) or ribbing (joking) about anything I like or don't like, aka "I can't stand the Cure, his voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I don't know how you can have a couple dozen songs of theirs on your 333!" or "I love the Smiths and don't understand how you can like the Cure but not the Smiths??"

I think the only kinda thing that would offend me would be "You like the Cure? You must be stupid / a loser / insane / have been dropped on your head several times as an infant ..." Personal attacks is probably my fine line. That's my problem with politics. There are good-intentioned Repubs and Democrats. Just simply based on the sole fact they align to a certain party doesn't make them evil / stupid / anti-America ... but some people make those sweeping judgements. Same with racism, religionism, etcism.

If anyone wants to post under "Bill Fox - How It Feels" a comment like, "I didn't make it 30 seconds into this song, totally missing the appeal here. Did he record this with a Galaxy III? And the guy can't even sing. I'm glad he found at least one fan!" that's all fine by me. Or even the Spinal Tap two word review, "Shit sandwich". I'll probably laugh, if it's clever. As long as your basic intention is being truly honest about your feelings about the song, not making it about the person who likes the song.

I hope I have never posted a comment that made the poster feel like it was a shot against them. If so, I apologize. Call me a shit sandwich and we'll be even.

As for a 'lobster' thread, I'd be interested to see songs someone hates that the rest of the world seems to love. I'm not offended if someone hates a song I love. Or a singer I like. Or an album. I find it interesting.

I do note that @sadchild is less familiar with country songs. While I do not consider Kiss You All Over to be country, the band identifies as a country band. The version they have made available to iTunes has a country flavour. This may contribute to his missing this one.
They were played a lot on Country radio back then (and Still get play on Prime Counrtry on SXM) so yeah. 'Kiss You All Over' was their Yacht Rock crossover

I see your point. If I posted my favorites in a way that juxtaposed Ty Segall's Slaughterhouse with Sarah Mclaughlin"s Freedom Sessions, it would present quite the contrast.

Today a break from ****. A top 10 (top 8) from Air Supply (thanks for the idea @scotchandcigar )

8. Here I Am (Just When I Thought I was Over You)
7. Every Woman In the World
6. Sweet Dreams
5. The One That You Love
4. All Out of Love
3. Even the Nights Are Better
2. Making Love Out of Nothing At All
1. Lost In Love

I think "Making Love Outta" is the only Air Supply song I would go out of my way to listen to once in a while. The rest is too syrupy for me.

However, the literal version of "Making Love Outta" is friggin gold! I laugh every single time.

Ugh. They did this infomercial for a soft rock CD collection. They're sitting in white comfy chairs, with a giant glass pitcher of lemonade on the table. It's everything I hate, and most of the music on those CDs sucks, too.
