At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I've been pondering the whole "the birds and the bees" thing, because I realized that I don't actually know how birds reproduce. First, let's get this out of the way:

The phrase "the birds and the bees" is a term used to explain the mechanics of reproduction to younger children, relying on the imagery of bees pollinating and eggs hatching to substitute for a more technical explanation of sexual intercourse. The story typically involves bees pollinating flowers, symbolizing male fertilization, and the birds laying eggs, which equates to female ovulation.

So I know all that, but that doesn't actually answer the question of how birds reproduce. And I realized that at my advanced age, I never really thought about it. Perhaps all of you know, but I didn't. And it involves a term I never heard before.

A cloaca or vent, is the rear orifice that serves as the only opening for the digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts of many vertebrate animals, including birds. Birds reproduce using their cloaca; this occurs during a cloacal kiss, whereby they touch their cloacae together for only a few seconds, sufficient time for sperm to be transferred from the male to the female.

So that's it. I never heard of that before. And I learned that some male ducks have penises, but most other birds don't. Both sexes have just have the cloaca. I hope I've enlightened everyone's day.

He will protrude his endophallus and insert it in the queen’s sting chamber. When he disengages with the queen his endophallus will be ripped off.
