Hendrik Koopman 9.24.1927 - 8.24.2019

Today was my Dad's birthday.

He would have been 99. He died like the thread title says one month before his 92nd bday.

I'm not looking to farm sympathy from you guys, I just was a bit sad today and wanted to mention it and my Aunt Kath.

I'm kinda broken up with Pam at the moment so I didn't expect her to reach out and besides her I really only have my 2 aunts and uncle.

Aunt Kath called me to talk about him and started off by asking me what my favorite memory of him was. We then got into a great conversation about my dad and her parents and all sorts of stuff and it meant so much to me that she called. She's the only person I love in my life who remembered and that means so much to me.

My mom and her sister (Kath) didn't really like each other. But once my mom died Aunt Kath was so great to my dad. My aunts and uncle, despite not being blood, really thought of him as a brother, not just a brother in law. Aunt Sally was his financial advisor and Aunt Kath was always there to talk. After Mary Ann was dead Kath really stepped up to help my dad through friendship and conversation.

And she's done the same for me. Since Hendrik has died she has been my go to family member to talk to about everything. We have our watch along calls every week for 90 Day and I can talk to her about anything and she is always there for me. She will also call me out on my bullshit which I really appreciate.

She was a real sister and friend to my dad after his wife died and she is a mom and friend to me ever since my dad died.

Anyway, I wanted to rant and be a sad pussy for a min. Sorry guys.

I think of people that pass on their birthdays and death anniversaries too. Perfectly normal. And telling stories about them and remembering them keeps them in your life.

Thanks man. I think of him at some point everyday even though it's been 7 years. I got super lucky to be born his son. He was the greatest man I've ever known.

Besides Wolf.

I promise I'll stop bumping this downer thread that's kinda selfish seeing how it's all about my gay ass feelings and shit but I want to ramble about one more thing.

I don't cry very often. I can tell you the exact last 4 dates when I full on cried for an extended period:

July 31, 2025 - I paid the vet to murder Athena. I didn't think I'd full on cry but oh boy did I.
February 9, 2025 - Eagles won their second Super Bowl, LIX and I was with Pam when it happened.
August 24, 2019 - Hendrik kicked the bucket. It was a ton of fun finding his still warm dead body.
February 4, 2018 - Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl, LII and Hendrik was there with me. Even though he didn't care about sports he knew how much it meant to me.

IDK, I'm not a big crier. Pam would get mad at me about that cause she would want me to show more emotions and be more of a girl I guess.

Anyway, speaking of Pam, she introduced me to country and then I came across this song and idk what's up with it but I'm not at all exaggerating when I tell you every time I hear this song I either get full on misty or a couple tears happen. The first verse and the last verse get me. The whole thing is great but by the time he gets to this at the end:

Daddy, I’m afraid
Won’t you stay a little while
I never thought I’d see the day I had to say goodbye
Daddy, please don’t go
I can’t do this on my own
There’s no way that I can walk this road alone
Daddy grabbed my hand and said

Just ‘cause I’m leaving it don’t mean that
I won’t be right by your side
When you need me and you can’t see me
In the middle of the night
Just close your eyes and say a prayer
It’s okay, boy, I ain’t scared, I won’t be here
But I’ll always be right there
Even though I’m leaving I ain’t going nowhere

I have to fight back full on crying every single fucking time. Even just looking up those lyrics right now got me on the verge.

Fucking Luke Combs. Both not cool and also really cool bro.

I wish I could have shared this song with him. He knew he was going to go for like the last couple years and I'm really happy I was able to be there with him every day for the last 18 months or so.

Koop, here is another song that will get you misty-eyed, I Still Can't Say Goodbye from Merle Haggard's 2005 Chicago Wind album – and please don't feel you have to "fight back" tears. There are days I cry because I miss my wife Teri so much – and she's been gone since April 2020. I often play a Christian song by the Browns: "We miss you here but you're better off there." Yep, that is how I feel.
