What the hell is wrong with people? If performing your primary job function is in conflict with your religion, then find another occupation. No one's forcing this woman to be a clerk.
Kentucky clerk must issue same-sex marriage licenses - CNNPolitics.com

huh, so what happens when they still refuse? can the people wanting to get married call the cops? if so do the cops then issue citations or orders to appear in court to these clerks?

bigger picture...what happens if the US supreme court issues a ruling and people dont listen? i think, if my history knowledge is anywhere near accurate, the president can call in the national guard to enforce the laws. like with the desegregation of schools in the 60s.

ok cool. so according to that the judge can do a bunch of different things. fines, jail, firing her or just forcing that clerk to pawn off here duties on an underling.

How she hasn't been fined or put in jail for contempt, I don't know. I understand that she's voted in and can't be fired, but there has to be something about her having to uphold the laws as her job responsibilities.

good, screw her. let her sit in jail for awhile.

this has got me thinking lately. first off i think shes kinda funny. married 4 times and a kid outta wedlock (btw thats just a dumb old term but shes living in a dumb old world) and yet she still tries to hold the moral high ground. its laughable.

the cynic in me has been thinking that this may be a smart move on her part. there are sadly a bunch of people who agree with her and if she makes a big enough stand she may be able to monetize this stunt with a book or paid interviews. i think i may be giving her too much credit but if that is the case its a smart move.

In her belief system, her sins have been forgiven, so you can't count that against her (in her belief system). Also, being jailed for her faith is definitely the right thing for her to do (in her belief system).

I disagree with her, but I understand her.

I see what your saying, and I agree that's how she views it, but here's what's wrong with it. First of all, this whole "belief system" thing is a bunch of crap. She only came around to this particular belief system when she got married for the 4th time. Prior to that, she had a different belief system. And who can determine what constitutes a valid "belief system"? A person can do all sorts of crazy shit, using the same premise. Who's to say that a belief system that's ancient and practiced by many is more valid than one that's not?

The answer is that the constitutional intent was to keep people (or government) from infringing on others. So it goes to say that a person can't be infringed upon, or infringe others. In other words, people have the right to live by the law of the land; it shouldn't be infringed upon by others.

There would be no conflict at all (to herself or others) if she simply resigned; that's the answer, and the only answer. For her to do anything else is just making a public spectacle, for the purpose of publicizing how great her belief system is, and how wrong she believes gay marriage to be.

I disagree with her, but I don't automatically think that means she or her belief system is full of crap.

Also, there's this, which I though about posting in the politics forum, but anyway, it explains why I'll never vote for one of these types. It baffles me how any person wanting to be president of the US, can embrace the idea, that people should be free to not do their job. And that it's OK to defy the laws of this country.
Republican candidates rally around Ky. clerk Kim Davis - CNNPolitics.com

that begs the question of these candidates, is it ok to break any law that differs from christian doctrine. cause we all know they only support this woman to get the christian, more specifically, the evangelical, vote.

“An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so. Now the law of nonviolence says that violence should be resisted not by counter-violence but by nonviolence. This I do by breaking the law and by peacefully submitting to arrest and imprisonment.” - Gandhi

Sometimes laws need to be broken.

I like how you insert words like "automatically", which I never used. Anyway, people can believe whatever they like, it's a free country, and if she thinks it's the right belief system for her, great. I have friends who follow the same religious path she has taken. But for her to spend most of her life not following the beliefs she has now, and then uses her new beliefs to deny people their rights, that's a bunch of crap. She's just grandstanding, instead of resigning.

Let's just say that if she were Muslim, they'd have a different take.

usually laws that are broken, and then the people who break those laws are widely accepted, are to move society forward, not backward.
