"Umami" (うま味) is a Japanese word which translates to "delicious taste" and refers to the savory taste of foods containing glutamic acid (monosodium glutamate). The word was coined by Tokyo chemistry professor Kikunae Ikeda, who probably never considered how the word would sound to English-speaking people: "Oooh, Mommy!"

Are people really committed to a vegetarian lifestyle if they eat plant-based food that looks like meat and tastes like meat?

Sure. People quit meat for health, ethical and environmental reasons. Most for some combination of those. Not all of them want to give up meat flavor.

The new fake meats are just as unhealthy as real meat, so they appeal to the ethical and environmental vegetarians/vegans. I had a Beyond Burger Friday night at a vegan restaurant. It wasn't bad. I rushed home and ate some salami to make up for all the vegetables.

They have no cholesterol, the saturated fat is lower, and there are no trans-fats. Those all sound better to me.

I hope you downed it with a couple of beers.

The Beyond Burger (4-oz. patty)
  • Calories: 290
  • Total fat (g): 22
  • Saturated fat (g): 5
  • Trans fat (g): 0
  • Cholesterol (mg): 0
  • Sodium (mg): 450
  • Protein (g): 20

85-percent lean beef (4-oz. patty, based on USDA National Nutrient Database)
  • Calories: 283
  • Total fat (g): 17.5
  • Saturated fat (g): 6.7
  • Trans fat (g): 1
  • Cholesterol (mg): 100
  • Sodium (mg): 82
  • Protein (g): 29.4
So the Beyond Burger has a little less trans fat and saturated fat. It has more total fat, much more sodium and less protein. If I was going to consume that much fat (and I am) I would pick the real meat. Dietary cholesterol isn't the bogey man we used to think it was.

I think you're being a little optimistic with 85% lean. We often use 80% for grilling, and I'd imagine it's lower at the fast food joints.

I agree that none of it is really healthy.

Don't know if this place has been mentioned here before but we just got one that opened in our neighborhood. Although they appear to be expanding more in the South. Looks pretty good but I think I better be well worked out and ready to eat when I go.

In December at several locations in Los Angeles, San Diego and Oklahoma, Del Taco began testing a taco made with a plant-based product called "Beyond Meat." A video posted today on Del Taco's Instagram page proclaims, "The future of tacos is coming on 4/25." That is when the meatless taco will be available nationwide. Gak! Memo to Del Taco CEO John Cappasola: fake meat is not "the future of tacos."

A&W has had Beyond Meat burgers and breakfast sandwiches for over a year.

I’m not sure you can call what is in a regular taco meat anyways.

If it were cheaper than meat I may try it. Not going to pay more. Let the vegans do it. Also they would need a beyond meat bacon as well.

We tried MooYah today. It was quite good. I thought better than Five Guys. They spice up the meat. I had the works: Burger, Fries with a Chocolate Shakes. I'm calling it The MooYah Experience. The place is nice inside and they have their own MooYah music channel. Plus the place was pretty quiet so I'll be heading back one of these days.
