DRC May Be Nearing The End.....

Yes, Mister wolf, I am Rewind on SiriusBuzz. For 13 years I wrote a daily column of radio history, music trivia and celebrity birthdays for the LARadio website. Part of the column was a feature called Rewind and my email address (which I no longer have) was LARadioRewind. I joined SiriusBuzz in October 2017 and I joined DRC in February 2019. I chose the name Channel98 here because my favorite radio station when I was a kid was top-40 "Color Radio Channel 98" KFWB in Los Angeles.

I know that's in the past but can you resurrect it and give us a new, original one just for today? As if it was going to be published on LARadio.

JHDK, here is the column from May 12, 2005:

On this day in music and radio history:

1960 – ABC broadcasts a Frank Sinatra television special, Welcome Home Elvis, featuring Elvis Presley, back from his tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany.
1963 – Bob Dylan walks out of a dress rehearsal for The Ed Sullivan Show after being told he can not perform Talking John Birch Society Blues.
1971 – Mick Jagger marries model Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias.
2001 – Perry Como dies at 88; among his 192 chart hits, 1943-74, are 14 number ones.
2003 – National Public Radio announces the creation of Day To Day, a daily news program co-produced with Microsoft's online news magazine Slate and hosted by Michael Kinsley.

Birthday bio: Billy Swan was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on this day in 1942. He wrote Lover Please, a 1962 hit for Clyde McPhatter; worked as a guard at Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion; and produced albums for Kris Kristofferson and Tony Joe White. His first single, I Can Help, was a number-one pop and country hit in 1974. He placed 15 more songs on the country chart and in 1986 formed Black Tie with Randy Meisner of Poco and Jim Griffin of Bread. Also born on this day: Katherine Hepburn (1907) and Steve Winwood (1948).

L.A. Radio Rewind: On this day in 1995, the top five songs on "Power 106" KPWR were (1) Da B-Side by Da Brat & The Notorious B.I.G., (2) This Is How We Do It by Montell Jordan, (3) This Lil' Game We Play by Subway, (4) I'll Be Around by Rappin' 4-Tay, (5) Water Runs Dry by Boyz II Men.

That's cool. The Sun Sentinel sometimes has a blurb like that in the back of the sports page where they also have the advice column.

I'm such an old man. I look forward to reading Asking Eric. It's a fun column.

Dear Abby and Ann Landers can go kick rocks. Asking Eric is the best.

Look at him....He looks like guy I want to give me advice.

Today's was fun as always:

This lady's mother-in-law is a grouch and grumpy about everything. Eric told her to take it as a lesson that they shouldn't ever go on trips together again and just stick to family events. He can be blunt sometimes but he's very sweet at the same time. Eric is awesome! I love him.

It says at the bottom of the column that it's distributed by the Tribune agency. When I hear Tribune I think Chicago Tribune. I imagine there's probably other tribunes in the country, but I'm guessing he's syndicated out of Chicago.

One thing we need to establish at the new place is no off-topic posts, and no thread hijacking!

That happens way too much around here and I dare say that's a small part of why it's so dead.

What are your thoughts on Legos? Pam's kids love them. They go to Legoland more than Disney World.

The hotel rooms at that place are really cool and super well themed.

Are you saying that we get off-topic on threads, and that's somehow bad? Or are you referring to something else?

There are some occasions where it happens (and I'm guilty of a few of them), but on other forums I've seen the Administrators or moderators try to steer the conversation back on topic. That should be, if not a rule, at least the general M.O.

I also propose no seconding on the future Celebrity Death Thread (and it should be a whole subforum), so we don't get into any flame wars involving who is and isn't a celebrity. Make a section where each death becomes it's own thread in it's own subforum, not just one massive thread.

Ehh...idk about that. A lot of the celebs are nowhere near big enough to have their own threads. Besides Norm, the last 2 celeb deaths that hit me the hardest were Harris WIttles (Parks and Rec writer who was often on a podcast I like) and Tony Markellis (The bass player for Trey's side band TAB).

But there wouldn't be any arguments about whether they were celebrities. If there was a question about getting their own thread, what makes people think they belong in the Celebrity Death Thread? And that particular section wouldn't include JUST famous celebrities, it would include the 'fringe' celebrities that only a few people know about with their own thread. Once again, I've seen places where someone like that has their own thread, but no one responds. And it could be anyone in the news, it could be the local news anchor who got hit by a bus, it could be the local businessman who was shot by his wife after being caught in bed with a transvestite. It wouldn't matter! Even if you have a relative that passes away, that could go there too! Kind of a combo of the CDT and the In Memorium thread, except it's own subforum with individual threads.

I partially agree with Jon but I will go further. I'll get off at the depot. (I stole that line from Groucho Marx.) There should be two threads for obituaries: one for sports figures and one for people in the entertainment industry. And no more "seconding" or annual voting on dead celebrities.

Those forums have a thousand members. We have like 10 active members. One time recently, we had a discussion about pets in another thread. After about 4 posts, we moved the conversation. But otherwise, I don't see what's wrong with a handful of people getting off-topic. It's the way people converse IRL. The only downside I see is if someone is looking for a series of posts related to a particular conversation, for archival or reference purposes. But even then, you could just do a search.

I don't see how this is turning away members in the least. If you want the reason that each former member has left, I can tell you. But it has nothing to do with off-topic conversations.

Sorry, but again, I disagree. Seconding is how we determine if the person is counted in CDT. It's simple. If it's seconded, it counts. If not, it doesn't. Why would we want to create 200 threads every year, and have half the threads contain 1 post?

Yea I don't hate the idea Jon but I like what we do now better. It fun to fight about if someone is really a celeb and worth a second.

And if it's a death that really gets to one of us (like Tony for me) everyone else is nice about it even though there could clearly be a debate about his worthiness of a second.
