DRC May Be Nearing The End.....

Mister scotch, sometimes when I start a new thread on SiriusBuzz, I beg and plead for others to participate so the thread doesn't become my personal blog. I beg and plead – to no avail. I have also, several times, asked Charles to update the home page. There is a 2015 story about Howard Stern and links to four other stories, all from 2015. I volunteered to write a brief SiriusXM history with which he could replace those decade-old stories. I have also volunteered to be an administrator or a moderator. There are two people listed as moderators. One hasn't been active since January 2013 and the other hasn't been active since December 2023! I'm still waiting to hear from Charles.

My user name on that site is Rewind. That was also the name of one of the daily features I wrote for 13 years for the now-shuttered LARadio site.

Seems similar to where I used to get a lot of my satellite news, the now defunct Orbitcast.com

Just for giggles I figured I'd try XM411 to see if it was still around and it redirects to the xmfanstore.com. Always knew those two sites had a rivalry.

XMFan was started by Zbigniew "Ziggy" Szymczyk – who owned the server – and Ryan Morris, who owned the name and received a commission from the sale of radios, antennas, shirts and caps on the XMFan Store. Long before Sirius merged with XM, Ziggy started accepting advertising for Sirius radios. Ryan objected. He would get no commission from sales of Sirius radios. They went their separate ways. Ryan relaunched XMFan on a new server and Ziggy launched XM411. Ziggy joined the "new" XMFan and made a post inviting XMFan members to his new site. Ryan deleted the post and blocked Ziggy, along with any mention of XM411 from anyone. Ziggy shut down XM411 in 2013 due to lack of interest and lack of participation. Ryan bought the XM411 name and linked it to XMFan. Ryan shut down XMFan in 2020 but the XMFan Store is still in business.

On an old thread here, somebody said I ran XM411. I didn't. The person also said I didn't have an XM subscription. I did. And still do.

It would be interesting to learn how SiriusBuzz is funded. Because obviously, they can keep a site going that hardly anyone uses. But also, it could potentially be a place we can transition to.

If the site is mainly you, and Listener is also there, then it seems like there wouldn't be much push-back if we moved to there. They appear to have similar forum categories and organization. It also looks like Semipenguin (penguin) was a member too.

It if it’s run by another absentee administrator then we’ll be back in the same position again later. What I have in mind for the future isn’t necessarily satellite radio related, at least not all of it (and it will probably include a political forum). But that’s just a matter of time.

Charles LaRocca earned a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems from Westfield State University in Massachusetts and launched SiriusBuzz in 2006. He partnered with Satellite Standard Group founder Spencer Osborne in 2007. But who is funding the site? I have no idea. It's a mystery, one which I doubt Paul Drake, Peter Gunn, Hercule Poirot, Jim Rockford, Veronica Mars, Jessica Fletcher, Theo Kojak, Lennie Briscoe or Lieutenant Columbo would be able to solve.

At the very least, if we go dark here before we find a place to go, that could be a place to lay-over while we figure it out.

They do have advertisements on SiriusBuzz. Maybe that's enough to pay the bills. Without e-commerce and high traffic volumes, monthly server costs are supposed to be pretty low.

And for whatever home we find, satellite doesn't need to be the main focus. Music, movies, sports, and pop-culture are the main things that we really cover here these days.

Charles is on the SiriusBuzz site almost every day. He is quick to respond to questions posted on the site – but he is verrrry slow to respond to any personal messages I send. Maybe the DRC moderators would have better luck getting a response from him. Charles is also a web designer and developer. (Gee, that sounds like a spider, doesn't it?) Here is his website:

I believe that site has been around for quite a while. They have just about everything we have here. Don’t know if that site has enough active users? Probably over thinking this. Why bother create another forum if there isn't much active users. Unless someone wants to spend the money $$ and do the upkeeps here? But there would be a lot of history lost. Just for the sake of it, I went over there and signed up. The awesome thing is that I'm surprised that no one over there uses the username, Wolf.

I'll still hangout over here. In the meantime, I'll see what all the buzz is is over there.

This is unacceptable.

but the new owner will need to pay the bills and deal with the behind the scenes administrative stuff.

How much will it cost? It can't be that much, I'll just pay for it.

But I'm very lazy, one of you will have to do the admin stuff.....

If it comes down to me doing admin shit or DRC goes down, I'll do it. But I'd rather (beskiing) not.

We can start from scratch with a new forum.

No.

We can find another forum that is already established to join, and hopefully most of us can move over there and still stay in touch.

Yuck. I don't want to mix with dirty randos.

4. We take a moment to say our goodbyes before the lights go out.

Absolutely not. We are all stuck with each other for the long haul.

It appears that the main poster is Channel98, with few others. Also, Listener is a member there. So while there are members we don't know, it looks like we could move in and be 95% of the active membership.

Thank you for productive suggestions.

But fuck that.

I will not let DRC die.

Gemini says it's really cheap.

I'm all about paying for it. Being able to lord my authority over Hectic is worth a few hundo a year alone.

And once again I am making jokes but I'm totally serious. Tell me logistic details about what needs to be done to keep DRC alive and I will make it happen.

I love this place. It's outlived both my parents, too many GF's to count along with Tom Cat. Athena Cat has lived her entire life knowing DRC was, is and will remain to be a constant.

This place is my fucking diary. Like I'm a goddamn schoolgirl or some shit.

I emphatically refuse to start over somewhere else.

Hectic, DM me or call me or whatever. I'm about to DM you my number. I will take the reigns from Taylor. Whatever it takes.

I feel like I just cheated on my first love. This is not how I want to live my life.

I'm now more determined than ever to keep DRC alive.

Yea that place is almost dead only a few posters. I'm assuming Rewind is Channel98 over there?

Don't Stop Believin

Thanks. Now I have to listen to Journey and rewatch The Sopranos.

The more time goes by the better and better I think that abrupt series finale really was.

I'm sure critics smarter than I have analyzed it but it is a perfect symbolization of how Tony's life is a constant, stressful, straight line. At some point, most likely violently, but maybe not, it will come to an abrupt end. The finale was summing up Tony's life. Wanting to be with family, always a bit worried that some stranger might be out to get him, and always worrying about his business while playing it cool.
