Wolf’s playlist is what happens when you grow up on a steady diet of Mountain Dew, wrestling intros, and the belief that guitar solos are a personality trait.

If the 90s were a journal, Madison wrote in it with gel pens.

scotch would be the barista judging your order while recommending an album recorded in a basement on a four track.

enough adult contemporary syrup to drown a Hallmark store. His idea of “rock” is Hootie

As for mine

“I write poetry in a dimly lit room”
Yeah and...

“I once got kicked out of Hot Topic for loitering”
Yeah and...

“I swear Crash Test Dummies is actually brilliant.”
Yeah and...

J/K, pretty funny feedback actually

Okay, here's some more ChatGPT observations:

Songs that seem overvalued relative to the usual 90s canon

Not "bad"—just songs where this particular list is giving them considerably more love than the normal cultural hierarchy would.

1. Tubthumping — #7

This remains the funniest one.

But I'm increasingly convinced the placement makes sense for this group. It's an extraordinarily effective pop song: weird verses, huge chorus, unusual vocal textures, repetition, and that accordion/piano combination.

It's gone from "novelty one-hit wonder" to "wait, this song is actually fantastic."

2. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm — #8

This might be the clearest 90s nostalgia reappraisal on the whole list.

It's an odd little song that shouldn't have become a gigantic radio hit, and yet it did. The list is basically saying its weirdness has aged well.

3. Runaround — #12

This one is especially interesting because Blues Traveler doesn't usually occupy the same critical space as R.E.M., Nirvana, Depeche Mode, etc.

But Runaround is an absolutely killer piece of 90s radio songwriting. The harmonica is instantly identifiable, the groove is infectious, and the chorus is huge.

4. Right Here Right Now — #23

This is one of the biggest "cult classic" elevations.

It has five votes, but its relatively modest score per vote tells you something: lots of people included it, but didn't necessarily put it extremely high.

The most undervalued songs

This is where the list gets really fun.

Wonderwall — #537
I still can't get over this one.
Whatever you think of Oasis, Wonderwall at #537 is an enormous departure from the conventional cultural status of the song.

And this isn't simply "the list doesn't like Oasis." Supersonic is down at #732 too.
It seems like Oasis just doesn't connect with this particular group.

Scar Tissue — #637
This is another huge one.
The Chili Peppers have eight songs in the dataset, but Scar Tissue is way down there.

Meanwhile the list is much more receptive to some of their less universally canonical material.

That suggests the group isn't just rewarding "most famous RHCP song."

Give It Away — #561
Same story.
You'd expect this to be one of the group's defining 90s songs. Instead, it's buried.

Closing Time — #735
This is one of those "how is this even down here?" songs.
Not necessarily because it's one of the greatest songs of the decade, but because it is almost a perfect encapsulation of late-90s alternative radio.

The list has a strong affection for that type of music, yet Closing Time gets almost no traction.

Some of biggest 90s songs we completely omitted. Some thankfully.
It noticed that we're not big fans of R&B.

I Will Always Love You — Whitney Houston
My Heart Will Go On — Celine Dion
Wannabe — Spice Girls
Fantasy — Mariah Carey
California Love — 2Pac
Juicy — The Notorious B.I.G.
Killing Me Softly — Fugees
This Is How We Do It — Montell Jordan
The Boy Is Mine — Brandy & Monica
Macarena — Los del Río
Regulate — Warren G feat. Nate Dogg
Un-Break My Heart — Toni Braxton

The common thread is they're all good songs that have been played to death, and we're all sick of them.

The countdown is complete. The votes have been counted. R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” finished at #1 but now the rankings get thrown into the Madness.

It’s time to determine the DRC Madness #42: #1 Song of the ’90s!

130 songs are entering the tournament. The matchups are not being randomized. Songs are being seeded based on where they finished in our countdown, with the bracket starting #1 vs. #128, #2 vs. #127, #3 vs. #126, and so on.

There are also two special additions. Since Aaron’s and my personal #1 songs didn't make the Top 128, they’re getting a ticket into the Madness:

Neil Young — “Harvest Moon”
Rob Zombie — “Superbeast”

That gives us 130 songs fighting for one title.

Some songs that dominated the countdown could be gone in the first round. Lower-ranked favorites could pull off an upset. And, as we’ve learned from previous Madness tournaments, the rankings don't mean a damn thing once the head-to-head voting begins.

Vote for the song you want to advance in each matchup.

Voting for this round closes Saturday, October 10.

Which songs survive? Which favorites get knocked out early? And which song will ultimately be crowned... Let the madness begin!

If you plan on passing on a vote, please notate it!

Let's do this. DON'T BE OFFENDED. Humor.
These are just as good as the ass-kissing reviews. I got a laugh at all of them.
Hectic
Hectic’s taste is exactly what you’d expect from someone who probably soldered their own subwoofer in 1998
1791059520382.webp
Well..........
I got this 1/2 stack 4x10 cabinet (four 10 inch speakers) when I was in high school. Someone had stripped the vinyl covering off it and stained the sides. I finished restoring it. I painted the face, put new grill cloth on it, loaded (and soldered....) new 10" speakers, and put a new back panel on it. I used to lug that thing to band practice every Friday for years. It weighs a freaking ton. (That's tonne to you IRBS.)
So yeah.....I was that guy, but this soldering was around 1985.

Their playlist is 90% “songs that make your mom nervous” and 10% “songs that make you nervous.” If it wasn’t loud, aggressive, or capable of summoning demons, Hectic didn’t want it. They are the reason Best Buy had to put the industrial CDs behind glass.
The funny thing is, is that I also listened to a lot of jazz and ambient stuff too. That stuff wasn't really chart or madness material.
I guess everyone needs a diversion from the demons.
