I'll be gone the whole weekend but I want to get the discussion started about DRC Madness #30.
BACK STORY
It's based on the "Are they a one-hit wonder" thread, where we've been collecting artists who had two top 40 hits and asking "are they subjectively a one-hit wonder these days?"
The original concept was deciding if Brownsville Station is only remembered today for "Smokin' In The Boys Room" or do people today also remember their other top 40 hit "Kings Of The Party".
That led to discussions like this:
-These guys are subjectively a one hit wonder. That second hit is LONG forgotten by most.
-Having a definition of "one-hit wonder" status that depend on "everybody" remembering the song is a crime against art.
Eventually the idea started to solidify:
-Every oldies station in the 1980s, '90s and early 2000s played "Incense & Peppermints" but ignored "Tomorrow". Strawberry Alarm Clock was not a one-hit wonder in 1968 but certainly can be considered as such in 2021.
Things got more contentious, however, when technicalities put artists like Nirvana and Pink Floyd into the "only 2 top 40 hits on the pop chart" category despite massive airplay and sales. Also it was controversial when members of very successful bands were listed because they only have two top 40s on the Hot 100 like Lyndsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Pete Townshend of The Who.
Despite valid points being made all around, I have assembled a list of 136 artists who, from a strictly technical standpoint ONLY, have only had 2 top 40s on the Hot 100. And from this comes our game! Where's the biggest injustice with that "Two Hit Wonder" label?
Here are the metrics:
At least one of the songs charted between 1970 and 1993. Who needs 55 mumble rappers from the 2000s clogging up the game, right? Let's stick to the years we all know best.
Why 136? It's my plan to avoid this:
"Why is Monty Python going up against The Three Stooges for best comedy teams of all time in the first round? Meanwhile, I have to choose either Shmeckey Shmeckton or Lenny Loserface to advance to round two??".
To solve this, we're going to pre-select the "GREAT EIGHT" who will enter the competition halfway through the madness. They are the chosen ones who automatically advance past the first 4 rounds, as nominated by us. We'll narrow 128 down to 8. Then round 5 will be the widdled-down 8 versus the "great 8".

PICK FIVE OF THESE ARTISTS YOU WANT TO AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCE TO ROUND 5 (OF 8).
